Danzig's Best "Solo" Album,
By "cooperbob" (Durham, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Danzig 2: Lucifuge (Audio CD)
While most Danzig fans feel that the first self-titled album is his best post misfits/samhain work, i've always had to give "Lucifuge" the slight edge...its just a more coherent work, with more blues influence and the feel of some voodoo infested Louisina swamp. Its heavy, brooding, and definitely has (dark) soul. Songs like "Killer Wolf" and "Pain in the World" slow down the tempo while losing none of the heaviness, while other tracks like "Long Way Back From Hell" and "Snakes of Christ" show that he's still capable of rocking in that Sabbath-esque way so prominently displayed on the first release. The real standouts here start off the second half of the album. "Devil's Plaything" begins beautifully and then evolves into an ominous, powerful rocker, while "777" displays an evil blues sound that you don't hear much from metal acts. Its probably one of my all-time favorite Danzig songs. "Blood and Tears" is almost like a '50's ballad, and its great. Glenn can really sing, and his vocal range is on full display here. Don't get me wrong, the first one's awesome, but in my opinion, the third incarnation of GD's dark vision reached its peak with this album.

If Jim Morrison and the devil collaborated in the studio this would be the result...and it's not bad. Some of the tracks here are straight up metal-but not too heavy-and others have a more classic rock sound; all of which feature Glenn Danzig's seductive vocals. The most classic rock 'n roll sounding tracks are "I'm the One" and the slow "Blood and Tears." The latter would've even been appropriate for an Elvis album. My favorite track is "Tired of Being Alive" which you can hear a clip of from the above link. It has an addictive rhythm you can't help but move your feet too, plus it has excellent backing vocals. "Girl" (my second favorite) also has an amazing beat with incredible guitar and "Morrisonian" lyrics like "Girl let's climb too high for the stars to reach us girl." Then there are songs to turn the lights out to like "Killer Wolf" and "Pain in the World." And then there is the beauty of metal in "Devil's Plaything." A mixed yet solid package that fans of the darker side of rock 'n roll will enjoy.

Demonic Emotions of the Soul!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Danzig 2: Lucifuge (Audio CD)
This album contains the basic elements which, I feel, cause such an apeal with Danzig. Relitively simple music, which bears similarities between "The Doors", and "Black Sabbath", all topped off with the haunting voice of Glenn Danzig. Danzig II, along with his other albums seem to be structured off of sheer emotion. A demonic little tidbit which stimulates the evil in us all through the chilling scream of Danzig, right down to the little miniature additions made by John Christ and Eerie von. The result is sheer brilliance. The first two songs almost serve as a summary of his last album, with "Long way back from hell" making musical reference to "The Hunter" and "Snakes of Christ" paying homage to its "Danzig's" (the album) "Twist of Cain". Danzig II: Lucifuge is a perfect addition to the demonic collection that bears the name "Danzig".

The peak of Glenn Danzig!,
By Steel Devil (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Danzig 2: Lucifuge (Reis) (Audio CD)
This album is a monster! When this first came out back in 1990 I was surprised with how different it was from the first album. This album has a great variety of styles from blues to metal to rock. The album kicks off with one of my favorite Danzig songs ever, "Long Way Back From Hell" which is moody and fast. Glenn's vocals are at a peak on this album. He really hits some killer high screams like in "Girl" and can sing softly like in "Devil's Plaything" which are both amazing songs. Glenn's first all out blues song "Killer Wolf" reminds me of Howlin' Wolf meets classic Elvis. They lyrics continue in the satanic vein which I think ads to the "danger" of Danzig's music. The production is much different on this album than the self titled. While the album is clear, it is not as "dry" sounding as the first album. If you are new to Danzig, this is a great place to start with a great variety. You will never get bored here. I highly recommend this one!!

The other releases are pale in comparison. Tired of being alive is a classic and Under her black wings is great. Good CD beginning to end, you won't be disappointed.

Among the best recordings ever,

Probably a tie for the best "metal" album (although in this case I use that term loosely) with Black Sabbath's Master of Reality. Although the first three Danzig albums are all essential, this is THE Danzig masterpiece. With the exception of I'm the One and 777, every song is excellent: dark brooding slow loud evil music. I'd say the best thing about Danzig the band is their musicianship, and that what hooks you to the music is usually not the chorus part, but the Verse part or the bridge. Example: Her Black Wings - Mediocre Anthem-type chorus, but the rest of the song is played and particularly sang with conviction. This is an album that you love if you have, and if you don't have it, you need it.

Danzig"Far beyond Misfits",
By A Customer
This review is from: Danzig 2: Lucifuge (Audio CD)
By looking at the album cover you may think this band is death medal. Lo'n'behold it is not, it sounds like Classic 70'z bluezy rock music with alittle metal. I think that this is the best Danzig. Though I like the old punk band the Misfits that Glenn Danzig started, I still think that this cd is woth geting. Even if you do not get this cd, the song, "mother" from the 1st CD is woth checking out. Don't be afraid of the satanic look. Just go for it.
