Should have been more included here,
By N. Durham "Big Evil" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Danzig - Archive De La Morte (DVD)
A Danzig DVD compiling a bunch of the former Misfits and Samhain frontman's videos has always been on the wishlist of many, but Archive De La Morte sadly comes up short. Besides the videos compiled here, there are no other extras, which for Danzig fans, is a crying shame. The videos that are here include three different versions of "Dirty Black Summer", two versions each of "How the Gods Kill" and "Bodies", three versions of "It's Coming Down", an unreleased video for the beautiful "Sistinas", and the hit live cut of "Mother". However, there's nothing else here after that, and anything, whether it be perhaps a "making of" for one or two of the videos, or an interview with Glenn himself discussing the alternate takes of the videos, and they would have been more than welcome here. Archive De La Morte is without a doubt worth checking out for Danzig fans and worth picking up for hardcore fans, but regardless you'll be left wanting more.

Great DVD; Plans to release a follow up are next,

This review is from: Danzig - Archive De La Morte (DVD)
This DVD is great, it offers the video from Danzig's own archive at a very low price. Some of the unreleased videos aren't good and you can tell why they were not released. Nonetheless at a low price no one has any excuse for not picking this up. The "Dirty Black Summer" is video is greenish- black and white version of the band playing and Glen walking around. "How The Gods Kill" is video of the band playing (Glen without a mic) in a spooky/romantic setting with the character from the CD cover, plus some cool wavey effects. The video for "Mother" is a "live" offering, while "It's Coming Down" is the complete opposite. Rumor has it that Jonathan Reiss a S&M director made it so "raw" (that's a euthanism- so no one gets in trouble) that Rick Rubin destroyed copies of it. All the "crazy" and "disgusting" stuff you've seen before ain't nothing until you see it with your own eyes.-- I warned you, now buy it.The setlist: 1) Dirty Black Summer Directed by Anton Corbijn- This is a shot in greenish/black film with Glenn walking around and the band playing. 2) Dirty Black Summer (Unedited Performance I)Directed by Anton Corbijn- This one is in color with scenes from the greenish/black film behind JUST Glenn singing. 3) Dirty Black Summer (Unedited Performance II)Directed by Anton Corbijn-This one is in color with scenes from the greenish/black film behind the BAND playing. 4) How the Gods Kill (R Version)-This is the same video put out with the How the Gods Kill Box Set. Artsy cathedral setting with two hot girls and an alive HTGK art. 5) How the Gods Kill (Unedited Performance)-Much like the video above, but less refined with shakey camera (hence the name- Unedited). 6) Sistinas (Never Before Released- This different live clips spliced together with the music played over it. 7) Bodies (Never Before Released I)Directed by Glenn Danzig- One camera of the band in a rehearsal type setting. 8) Bodies (Never Before Released II)Directed by Glenn Danzig- Same thing, but a slightly different version. 9) Mother 93' (Live)- This is NOT live, it's series of live shots with the studio version of Mother played over it. 10) It's Coming Down (MTV Version) Directed by Jonathan Reiss- A calm video in black and white with the band playing in a basement/dugeon setting. 11) It's Coming Down (Box R Version) Directed by Jonathan Reiss- Same video as above, but with some agressive acts

The reason I give this DVD four stars instead of five is because I'll take unreleased Danzig videos anytime. It could've gotten five if there were some bonus features on here, such as Glenn's creepy, dark humor when he's talking to people backstage or being interviewed that we Danzig fans all love from the guy. I have to say that although I've always felt that I'm as hardened a Danzig fan as they come and I could take anything dark or creepy that Glenn Danzig could throw our way, when I saw the TOTALLY UNSENCORED video for "It's Coming Down", even I was like "WOOAAAHHH, Glenn!!........" and not in a great way..it's a hell of alot more than I was expecting...what was in that video? Can't give it away...just pick it up and you'll see what I'm talking about..I'm still saying "WOOOOOAAAHHH!! Glenn......" But that aside, any Danzig freak MUST pick this DVD up for your collection. It would be a great idea to see the other two former Danzig home videos, "Lucifuge: The Videos" and "Danzig" re-released together on one or separate DVDs in the future. As far as the videos in this new DVD, all the videos are damn dark, cool and creepy. Unfortunately, the Sistinas video is a newer one, but a song as unbelievable and awesome as Sistinas deserves a video made for it, new or old.

I am a big danzig fan , upon hearing about this DVD I was thrilled , the videos for "bodies" are nice and also "how the gods kill" & "mother". but I don't need to see three versions of the same video that are practically the same. and some of the videos are just bad. Glenn , this is 2003 and the babes have changed since 88. love your music but you can charge a little more and put out a good DVD.

I'm not sure I feel 100% cool with this dvd. I guess in this day in age if you are going to do a dvd add some extra stuff. Why I have to watch the same video done just slightly different is kinda cheesey. I'm glad I finally got to see "It's coming down" video but now that I saw it in it's totally uncensored glory I never wanna see it again! Ouch! SOme of the videos are cool but some of them downright stink. I love Danzig and will always be a fan of his work- but his videos are just so stupid that they are almost funny...Sorry Glenn.

We want more!!!,

This was worth it alone for the videos Dirty Black Summer, Mother and It's Going Down, but as has been mentioned in every review so far, I wanted more. Some backstage footage, interviews, something - more so, because this was my favorite era of the band. Eerie, John and Chuck were still in the fold, and most of the videos come from my favorite Danzig album (III How the Gods Kill). While the aformentioned videos were very cool (I remeber the first time I saw them on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, so cool memories), a few were disappointing, like the How the Gods Kill video. Sistinas is a beautiful song, worthy of so much more than what is on the disc. The Bodies videos were cool, just the guys jamming, but I would love to see a 'real' video for this song. The alternative takes of each video were okay, but I probably wouldn't watch them again. But being the completist, I was glad they were there. Now that we're on the subject of different versions, the It's Coming Down extreme version is a hot topic among fans. Let me just say that I have a pretty strong stomach and I won't be watching that one again. I like the first version, the clean one, because it's just Glenn and the band rocking out in a dungeon. Great photography, simple (same reason I like Dirty Black Summer's video), and almost like seeing them live. Glenn's charisma as a frontman shows through, and I dig it. I am a huge fan, so this DVD was well worth picking up. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is the lack of extras. I just wanted more!

this dvd has a lot of great stuff from the original band. The performance's are good the girl's are hot!!!The only draw back is that there are no interview's or any of the video's from danzig 1 and 2 and no special features.{hence only 4 stars}If you are a Danzig fan, don't hesitate to buy it this was Danzig's best band and to see them play, is worth the money alone. The mother video is great for all of us who saw this band,to see just how good this band really was!!!

I like the different videos for the songs on this DVD. The videos for "Bodies" is pretty cool. The band is jamming, in what looks like a storage warehouse for their gear, while hot women look on (the price Glenn pays for fame). In the second version, in what is obviously a joke, one of the women is dragged and put into an iron maiden. Hey, it's all in fun! I would have liked to have seen some interviews with the band members and some backstage footage, much like the first video. If Glenn does a second DVD for Danzig 4 - 7 perhaps he'll do that. It would be great to have interviews with the new members. It's a great addition to your Danzig collection and I highly recommend it! |
