Happy Birthday, Glenn Danzing! "Lucifuge" might even be better than the first album!, June 23, 2009
While I happen to think that Danzig's self-titled debut album is one of the greatest straight-up rock albums ever recorded, I think "Lucifuge" might even be better than the original "Danzig". Comparing the 1st and 2nd album is an interesting task because, "Danzig 1" is all straightforward hard rock. "Danzig 2: Lucifuge" is far more diverse in sound, although the good songs are just as consistent as "Danzig 1". Here's a quick run-through of the tracks.
"Long Way Back From Hell": Probably my absolute favorite song from the album, with heavy, melodic guitar riffs and a passionate guitar solo. A great swinging tempo and Glenn's powerful vocals drive this song throughout.
"Snakes of Christ": A more evil-sounding song with a guitar riff similar to "Twist of Cain" off the first, although the riff here is heavier. A great follow-up song.
"Killer Wolf": A more old-school sounding song, like a blues song you hear in the bars in movies. This song shows off more of Glenn's amazing, Elvis-inspired vocals.
"Tired Of Being Alive": A blazing, passionate guitar solo kicks this song off. More heavy, melodic guitar riffs over a stomping drumbeat and a dark but epic-sounding chorus.
"I'm The One": An acoustic, Delta blues song featuring John playing some great, blues-guitar licks while Glenn wails an interesting story over. A Danzig classic!
"Her Black Wings": A heavier, slower song where the riff snakes around back and forth. A slower, almost sad-sounding chorus that's absolutely larger-than-life in such a simplistic but amazing way. A dark and beautiful, grooving song.
"Devil's Plaything": Not as dark-sounding as "Her Black Wings", but still treads classic Danzig territory.
"777": Honestly, this song's a bit weaker compared to the others. It's not in the sections of the song, be it the acoustic verses or the electric chorus, it's just that there's absolutely no transition between the verse and the chorus. The two parts of the song feel as if they've literally been copied and pasted together in the recording studio. Poor songwriting here, but the separate pieces of the song are still good.
"Blood and Tears": An old-school, Elvis-like ballad in 3/4. Heartbreakingly beautiful with nice guitar riffs and amazing, passionate solos, with Glenn's lyrics and vocals being at the top of their game here. Sad as this song it, it's really beautiful and an absolute classic!
"Girl": A more anthemic, energetic song that kind of reminds me of hair-metal in a way. Great blast of more hard-rock energy.
"Pain in the World": A six-minute closer, this one's more darkness-oriented, but in a slightly more realistic way, lyrically. A very good song and an interesting way to close the album.
Well I have no idea how many people will read this review, but I had to write it. "Danzig 2: Lucifuge" is a great album, and a Danzig essential. Once again I say, happy 53rd birthday, Glenn Danzig! Thanks for the time, and peace.

Danzig on the Bayou , August 9, 2008
There's something extra dark and extra special on this one.
It sounds as if it were recorded on a humid Summer night somewhere in the country.
There's a dirty and deep feel that goes beyond the dry AC/DC sounds of Danzig I. Something about it also rings fresher than the studio sound of Danzig III.
Slide guitar, stripped down blues meanderings...
A moderate amount of experimentation can be heard as well...
"Blood and Tears" marks Glenn's first true attempt at a ballad, and the refrain of "Tired of being alive" initiates an ethos unseen to this point; almost the antithesis of the invincible swagger of "Mother." Pain, alienation and warning are the themes.
This may well be the quintessential Danzig release.
A dark and melancholy preview of things to come.
