When Maia, the naive heroine of the silly comedy-adventure Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, fails to get the job she studied for at the prestigious Ocean Academy, she ends up going to work for the Nereids Kamchatka Branch. Operating at the fringes of the law, the Nereids provide a variety of useful services: they recapture stolen goods, catch crooks, collect overdue rent, and rescue lost kittens. But what they really provide is fan service. They execute all their assignments in outfits they apparently borrowed from the Folies Bergères. Maia begins as a typically well-intentioned klutz, but she soon gets into the spirit of the agency and pursues malefactors in a bikini bottom and peekaboo top. The chases, pratfalls, shoot-outs, and confrontations in Daphne all occur according to formula, but devotees of this type of hubba-hubba anime aren't likely to worry about niceties of plot construction or nuanced characterizations. (Rated 16 and older: nudity, violence)--Charles Solomon

4.0 out of 5 stars great series-action sequences clever & comedic, March 17, 2005

This review is from: Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - Initiation (Vol. 1) + Series Box (DVD)
I watched the whole series, not just this box set. I am including this as there is not much commentary in north america about this series.

This was a pretty good series. Only drawback is that animation is quite mediocre ie if used to ghost in the shell/mamoru oshi stuff, then it looks very cheap. Cheap in that there is not much contrast in color scheme & palette is bluish.

HOwever, if you liked MIDNIGHT RUN w/ De Niro which action sequences were very clever, not predictable & situations were funny. THen YOu would love this series.

Not as pretentious as NOIR. Very Fun.
Please note that amazon review that this show is very fan service is wrong. Only fan service really in opening credit & beginning episodes. NOT like Aika or Najica level.

2.0 out of 5 stars Daphne- not of the brilliant blue, September 19, 2008
This movie is just a waste of money and the story is so juvenile that it might as well be rated NC-17 for how much skin can we show and not be rated XXX. Don't waste your money, especially if you have young children at home.
