Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7 Daphne and her friend Annie are entering seventh grade. Daphne is blessed/cursed with two older sisters, Cassie and Lydia, who promise to ``look after'' her. Unfortunately, their idea of looking after Daphne includes signing her up for everything they like to do. Before she realizes what has happened, Daphne, rather shy by nature, is working for the Pep Club and running for vice-president of the seventh grade. Finally, when Cassie wants her to go shopping for ``in'' clothes while Lydia expects her to work on her campaign speech, Daphne tells her sisters to let her be herself. She joins the creative writing club, which is what she wanted to do in the first place. Daphne's character is well developed through interaction with parents as well as siblings and friends, and the family interaction is realistic. The importance of making your own choices is a vital (but definitely not subtle) message and is here wrapped in a package that preteens will enjoy. Light reading, particularly for the paperback rack. Candy Colborn, Cottonwood Creek Elementary School, Englewood, Colo.
