Book Description

May 1, 1999
As befits a pedigreed member of her sporty and intelligent breed, Dara, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was born in the lap of luxury. Growing up on an estate on the Chesapeake Bay, she suffers the tragic loss of her human Mother, an event that launches her on an odyssey of adventure, neglect, abuse and fear. That journey leads to an animal shelter, then to a cage--the one with an X on it. Rescued from a sure death at the eleventh hour, Dara embarks on a new life with her human Mom (and literary collaborator). Told in a persuasively canine voice, this dramatic story reveals the minds and souls of a magnificent dog and her compassionate owner. Their humanity and largeness of spirit will warm the hearts of readers of all ages. All profits will be donated to Dara's Canine Foundation Inc. to support adoption programs in animal shelters.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I was absolutely charmed. Thanks for telling your inspiring story and for highlighting the importance of animal shelters. I am sure that due to your efforts, many animals will be rescued the same way Dara was and live out their lives in loving homes." -- Donna E. Shalala

"I'll never look at Dara the wonder dog quite the same after hearing her side of things. I used to wonder when she was going to bite a hunk out of my loafers. Now I just want to give her a great big hug...Hers is a moving and powerful story." -- William Dunlap, Artist and Host, Art around Town, WETA-TV

"Lucky the parent or grandparent who can read Dara: Autobiography of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever with a favorite child. In the pages of this book you will find the true meaning of the bond we share with our animal companions." -- Robert F.X. Hart, President, American Humane Association

"With dogs, eyes, ears and tails say much more than words. A dialogue with them is so easy and clear--as Dara's story so beautifully expresses!" -- Antonio de Oyarzabal, Ambassador of Spain

From the Author

(Dara) I am a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, highly bred with a long pedigree and very fancy ancestors. I am also a shelter dog. My present name is Dara; however, I was born and registered as Kara. My life can only be compared to a roller coaster ride, with ups and downs from very high to very low to high again.

This review is from: Dara: Autobiography of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever (Hardcover)
Dara is a wonderful story that follows this wonderful Chessie thru some hard times only to end up with one of the most wonderful forever homes! Adopting a rescue dog is a wonderful opportunity to give a dog a second chance, like Dara demonstrates, they can be the best companion ever. ADOPTION DOES WORK
