best World War 2 prisoner escape story I have read,
This review is from: Dare to Be Free (Cassell Military Paperbacks) (Paperback)
I read this book in the original Penguin edition in the 1970s and thoroughly enjoyed it. I appreciated the daring of Thomas' escape, and his sheer determination to escape even while suffering from a major injury and disability. This intrepid journey to freedom alone in a strange country, having to continuously use one's wits to evade detection or capture, and surviving on one's own, served to inspire me and helped (along with some other books) build in me the spirit of individual exploration.
I also learnt about Greece in that period and was introduced to the little known Monasteries on Mount Athos; also, about Thessalonika and the canal dug by the Persians during the ancient Persian wars. Having lost track of my childhood volume, I am now seeking to get a fresh copy of this book. I am thrilled to find that Amazon has it! |
