Grade 3-5?A readable account of the life of Coretta Scott King that emphasizes her participation in the civil rights movement. Based largely on Mrs. King's book My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr. (Holt, 1993), this biography shows her to be a courageous woman who can stand on her own merit, and not just as the wife of one of the world's most well-known men. Black-and-white photographs and well-executed pencil drawings show the subject at various stages of her life. The book concludes with a three-entry list for further reading; two were published in the 1970s and are out of print.?Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL

Gr. 3-5. Using Coretta Scott King's autobiography as her primary source, Medearis fashions a concise, engaging biography for young readers. It charts the milestones in King's life from her early ambitions to be an opera singer through her marriage, her involvement in the civil rights movement, and her continuation of her husband's work after his death. Sensitive to many young readers' na{}ivet{}e about history, Medearis works into the narrative information on segregation, Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, and other key events in the civil rights movement. Illustrated with soft pencil drawings as well as numerous black-and-white photographs, this title makes a fine addition to easy-reading biography collections.
