4.0 out of 5 stars Dare to Lead gets to the point, May 3, 2004

This review is from: Dare to Lead: Leading with Respect, Sincerity, and Service (Paperback)
Lutz wrote "Dare to Lead" from the heart. That is obvious. A lot of people influenced his style and he tells the reader very clearly what that style is...respectful, sincere, and honest communications with the workforce.

He makes a big point about Servant Leadership in Chapter Five. Servant Leadership is not for everyone. It is a challenge to be a servant leader in today's business world. You run the risk of being gobbled up by the bigger fish in the food chain. Lutz is clear, however, that to maintain self respect, servant leadership is the only way to go.

"Dare to Lead" also has a challenge for supervisors to resolve employee disputes quickly. This is a tough sell. Most people and most leaders run and hide at the first sign of a conflict. Lutz gives some good advice to keep that reflex in check. He simply says to confront the problem then gives some steps to help you through the process. Good stuff.

The neatest part of the book is the reference to his first CO when he was in the Navy. He actually talked to this gentleman recently, who today is an 80-something retired three star admiral. This gives "Dare to Lead" some credibility with the past. Lutz says right up front that he has been at this for forty years and wonders if the lessons learned are as relevant today as they were in the Sixties.

"Dare to Lead" is a quick read. It is a small book, but it has a strong hook and while it won't make you a smashing success all by itself, it will act as a model of conscience to those who are so inclined to be in touch with their soft-skills side of leadership.
