Book Description

Dare to Live: Devotions for Those Over The Hill, Not Under It! is a jolt of spiritual inspiration, a quick boost for your soul. Rediscover God's grace, hope, and power for living-regardless of your place or age in life. In Dare to Live 87-year-old author Elizabeth Van Liere leads readers through a thirty-day journey to a fuller understanding of what it means to "season slowly with a mighty and loving Savior." This journey pursues a life characterized by relevancy not regret, generosity not grumpiness, and compassion to the end.

These quick shots of instant inspiration might be just what you need to keep going. Whether new to the faith or a life-long follower of Christ, readers old and young will discover the joy of what it means to be transformed into the image of Jesus and used for His purposes to the very end.

The perfect companion for those Over The Hill, Not Under It! Start living for Him, now!

When her husband of forty-five years died at the end of 1991, Elizabeth helped their daughter raise four young sons. Now at age eighty-seven, she still finds time to travel, visit her four adult children, ten grandchildren and “almost fourteen” young great-grandchildren. Elizabeth’s articles, poems, children’s stories and devotions have appeared in periodicals for some sixty years. Dare to Live is her first book... but Lord willing, not her last!

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is well thought out and put together. Excellent Christmas gift for any adult or for a personal purchase!
- Helen Catharine Roberts

I loved Elizabeth’s frank viewpoint. She is very transparent and has a quirky sense of humor that really drives home some hard truths. She talks about how nice it is to become a senior (you get discounts at restaurants) and then talks about the bad as well (your health may get worse or your ability to adapt to change is hampered). The book is a series of devotionals that each end with a prayer, Bible passage to pursue and questions to make you think.
- Sharon Williams

I think this is an excellent book, that can be shared with everyone, no matter WHAT they're age! Looking for a wonderful Christmas gift for your parents who 'don't need or want anything' and whose walls are full of pictures of the grandkid(s)? Then this is the gift you need to buy! First off, it has LARGE PRINT. Yup, no straining to read without reading glasses for mom and dad (can I get an alleluia?). That alone might make you buy it, BUT there's more! Elizabeth covers some great topics like grey hair, memory, worship, getting you money's worth, the digital age, bellyaching, rejoicing, Looks being deceiving, cheating on God, neighbors, name calling, directions, being stubborn, and even yard sales! Her stories are funny and to the point, and all of us, no matter our age, will be able to relate to them! Her included prayers are heartfelt and easy to pray. I highly recommend this book for all your gift giving needs to people who are older (aka part 30!), as it is an easy devotional to use. It would also be perfect for bible study classes.

I believe you will enjoy reading this book. It is in large print and easy to read. It hits the mark. I love it! The book "Dare To Live-Devotions for Those Over The Hill, Not Under It" is written by Elizabeth Van Liere. The author is a senior in her eighties. She gives timely and easy to read devotions. They deal with things that seniors live with. The main theme is that you should not give up no matter what your age. It is a great reminder for all of us to make the best of our lives. One of the devotions is called, "Chocolates are Yummy but God is Sweeter." I will let you use your imagination on that one. The book is very well written. I was given this book to read and give my honest opinion. That is what I have done.

Well, I'm not a senior yet... some day I hope to be... and I love this little devotional. I have always had a heart for seniors. I love to read their stories and learn about their struggles, their blessings... the whole bit. This book offers just that. Elizabeth Van Liere has written Dare to Live: Devotions for Those Over The Hill, Not Under It! It's a wonderful little devotional written for seniors. It is written in large print and it addresses issues that seniors face. Elizabeth shares her personal stories in a quick, encouraging, pick-me-up sort of way. She shares verses, "Building Blocks of Faith", asks questions at the end of each devotion, and always leads you to God. No matter where you are in life or how old you are... you matter! Dare to Live will help you to "rediscover God's grace, hope and power for living." If you are a senior, know someone who is, or plan to be one... I think you'll enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read devotional for seniors October 28, 2011
Format:Paperback
Written in large print for aging eyes, this is an easy-to-read, lightweight devotional book for elderly folks who want to keep their minds active and focused on God's Word. The entries are not deep theological treatises but simple and practical thoughts, reminding seniors not to coast spiritually as they are in their twilight years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dare to Live September 27, 2011
Format:Paperback
DARE TO LIVE is a book of devotional especially for seniors. Written in large print, it is very easy to read for those with poor eyesight. The writing is fresh and innovative, keeping the readers interest. It includes a prayer, scripture references to look up, an application (Building blocks to faith) and a question for you to either answer (there is room provided, if you want to write in a book) or ponder as you go about your day.

I read through this book in a day for review purposes, and feel this would be an excellent devotional for elderly friends that I know. Those in nursing homes who don't regularly get to attend messages will probably greatly appreciate this devotional. Also good for shut-ins.

The message isn't really deep, growing type devotionals where you read for Bible study, but this is great for a daily period in the Word. Recommended.
