Deluxe collection of some of the greatest Daredevil comics ever!,
By
This review is from: Daredevil by Frank Miller Omnibus Companion (Hardcover)
I didn't bother with the first Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson Omnibus, since I had previously purchased the Graphitti Designs Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller hardcover set. Sure it would have been nice to have them all in one big volume, but I couldn't justify the hefty price tag. Anyway, the first Omnibus might have been unnecessary, but the Daredevil Omnibus Companion was an absolute must-have.
This monster hardcover collects two of the absolute finest storylines in Daredevil history, at least one of which has to be considered one of the all time best comics stories - ever. Of course I'm talking about the Born Again saga, which ran through Daredevil 226-233. The story, which was written by Frank Miller with artwork by David Mazzucchelli (the team behind the equally impressive Batman: Year One), starts when a down and out (and I mean really down and out) Karen Page sells Daredevil's secret identity to the Kingpin's agents. The Kingpin uses this information to systematically destroy every aspect of Matt Murdock's life. Unfortunately for the Kingpin, when Murdock is at rock bottom he truly becomes a Man Without Fear. This really is the best Daredevil story you'll ever hope to read, and is one of those rare comics stories that never seems dated, no matter how many years (and readings) go by. The second major storyline collected in this hardcover is Frank Miller's 1993 return to Daredevil - the Daredevil: Man Without Fear 5-issue limited series. Miller, ably aided by John Romita Jr. serves up a dramatic and definitive retelling of Daredevil's origin, including his early encounters with the Kingpin and Elektra. This was the series that made me a Daredevil fan, so it's nice to see it collected in such a deluxe format. Also included is a pair of Spectacular Spider-Man issues with Miller artwork, Daredevil #219 (another Miller issue), and the Daredevil: Love and War graphic novel by Miller and Bill Sienkewicz. The quality of this hardcover is quite impressive. I had a much older trade paperback of the Born Again saga, and it pales in comparison to what is collected here. The pages are thicker, the whites are whiter, and the colors - dear God, the originals never looked this good! You also get a nice assortment of sketches, scripts, interviews, and other bonus material. This really is a must have for all serious Daredevil fans, as well as those who follow Frank Miller or just have an appreciation for the best examples of what comic books can be.

The best Daredevil stories ever told,

Before he became an industry legend with The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller made a name for himself writing and drawing Daredevil; thus elevating the otherwise B-level Marvel hero to new heights. Miller's return to Daredevil some time later would only end up conjuring the absolute best Daredevil stories ever told. This handsomely constructed, hardcover omnibus "companion" features Born Again, which in itself is worth the price of admission. Re-teaming with his Batman: Year One artist David Mazzucchelli, Miller weaves the best Daredevil story ever as the Kingpin learns Daredevil's secret identity, and proceeds to destroy his life. Also featured here is the excellent take on Daredevil's origin, The Man Without Fear, with artwork by the great John Romita Jr, and the Love & War graphic novel with Bill Sienkiewicz, along with a few single issues as well. Yes, this Daredevil by Frank Miller Omnibus Companion is more essential than the first Daredevil by Frank Miller Omnibus, and for Daredevil fans and/or fans of Miller, this omnibus is an essential pick up.

Unlike many people, I think Frank Miller is sometimes overrated. But not this time. His collaborative work is some of his best work and a lot of it is here.
Equally important is the quality of the reproduction. The paper and binding are nice and the reproduction is faithful to the source material. To be honest, I owned all the original stuff so the packaging was very important to me. It didn't disappoint.

For those who really enjoy comic books this is a must. I grew up on comic books, especially Daredevil, Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk. This Frank Miller graphic novel does an excellent job in telling the complete story of Daredevil. It even includes comic icons Captain America and Spider-Man just to name a few. I don't want to spoil anything for those true comic book heads but if you are looking for great story, artwork, and action, DAREDEVIL IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!
