Product Description

The latest addition to Marvel's red-hot Noir line offers a unique spin on the Man Without Fear! Prohibition-era Hell's Kitchen is Kingpin territory, and until now, his only problem has been the masked vigilante known as Daredevil. When gangster Orville Halloran arrives on the scene, fresh from a stretch in Sing Sing and eager to stretch his wings, Hell's about to get hotter. For P.I. Foggy Nelson and his loyal assistant Matt Murdock, it all starts when a desperate woman comes to their office with an irresistible story about her and Halloran. To Foggy, she's a client - to Murdock, she's enough to make Halloran Daredevil's next target. But Murdock is about to find out that half-truths are poison truths, and that the Kitchen is full of history that will put him on a collision course with both the old Kingpin and the man who wants to replace him. Collects Daredevil Noir #1-4.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noir intrigue, January 30, 2010
By AeroRep (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
As a big fan of noir, this trade piqued my curiosity upon first discovery, and with my familiarity with the Daredevil character in general being rather limited, will be judged strictly on its' own merits as a standalone, self-sufficient arc. The story certainly encompassed all the clichés and tropes of the genre; bad guys and private eyes, devious games and dangerous dames. The storyline revolves around two top mobsters vying for control of the city's crime element, when one callously employs the use of a professional killer to tilt the gainful scales. To add to the intrigue is the possibility of one being responsible for the murder of Daredevil's father, which along with his fascination for the primary suspect's paramour and story's femme fatale, lures him deeper into the abyss. The identities of the guilty gangster and deadly assassin make for a captivating game of cat and mouse, but the big reveals of both transpire much too quickly, conveying a rushed impression while falling short of further developing the plot and players in more dramatic shades of grey. So whereas the writing deftly accomplished the proper noir tone and atmosphere, a more fleshed out and thorough final act would have been the ideal resolution to this retro tale of deceit and treachery.
