Iolanthe "Lannie" Spenser has just lost her devoted father. Her mother left her when she was 6 weeks old. A loner as a child, she begins to experience unexplained paranormal happenings in her life. Now it is just her and her father's friend Jack. Jack has vowed to protect her. It is at the funeral that she notices a mysterious woman with a black hat and veil and two large men. When she asks Jack about them, she looks and they are gone. After the funeral, Jack begins to help Lannie put her life together. He asks if she wants to keep house or sell it. She wants to keep it. While the house will be paid for, she needs to have a job to pay for the taxes, utilities and other expenses. He is the owner of the D & D..Dares and Dreams. He offers her a job as a bartender. She goes home that night and begins to have a dream about the mysterious woman..whose face cannot be seen. A little blonde boy playing the violin appears as well. They are in a cemetery and the cemetery then gets dark and two men begin to chase them. She tells him to run..but he just plays the violin but she Lannie can't hear the music. He says to Lannie after she asks him why she can't hear it. He says that she is not ready to hear it. He tells her to concentrate and when she is ready to hear it she will. She wakes up with a lot of emotions running through her mind. She looks through some photo albums and finds a picture of the boy from her dream in it. She will ask Jack when he returns from his trip. She begins her job and D & D. The mysterious woman is at D & D. But then she is gone. Lannie starts to notice a black car following her. The next day a knock at the door and an envelope appears at the door with pictures of her at the cemetery, with Jack and D & D, her leaving her house. She has to wait for Jack to come back to tell him about it. She continues to work and this is where she meets Ash. There is an instant attraction. Jack comes back into town and insists on a bodyguard. She doesn't want one. It is at this point of the book the identity of the mysterious woman is revealed and Lannie's life is about to be turned completely around into a paranormal world she did not know of. With the help of the woman and Jack she is about to about her life and what will happen on her fast approaching 21st birthday. The relationship between Ash and Lannie develops and heats up and there is so much more to Ash and she is about to find out what it is. She also acquires a roommate Kali. A great character. I enjoyed the interaction between them. Jareth is another character that is great. I enjoyed the story very much. I don't want to give away too much. It is a simple plot and character rich but definitely keeps you on the edge with twists. I stayed up to finish this book. It is a page turner and I too hope it becomes a series.

3.5 for Dares and Dreams, May 11, 2010
This review is from: Dares and Dreams (Paperback)
Lannie Spencer went through her entire life not knowing who her mother was. On the day of her father's funeral she notices a mysterious woman watching her. After seeing her a few more times at the bar she now works at, Dares and Dreams, she finds out that his stranger is actually her mother and she brings some surprising news. Selene informs Lannie that she will come into her witch powers on her 21st birthday and that she will need to become half vampire like her if she is to survive the upcoming war with a vampire king who is after Lannie and her powers. At her side is her new vampire friend Kali and Ash, a man she falls head over heals in love with. Ash never expected he would love Lannie so much and care so deeply for her. He will let nothing or no one stop him from standing with her and fight against the vampire king. Lannie and Ash have the whole love at first sight thing going which I didn't like at first. But as the story goes on you can feel the love and bond between them and it becomes obvious that it is more than mere infatuation. Lannie is a strong woman. Her father died and the first time she meets her mother she finds out an evil vampire is after her for powers she didn't even know she had. Instead of hiding under the covers like most would do, she took it all in stride and was ready to meet what came at her head on. You have to respect that. My favorite character was Lannie's friend and roommate Kali. Kali educates Lannie some on vampire and I think helps her feel at ease with her new world. She is a really fun character with an adorable Australian accent. She is the type you wouldn't mind being friends with yourself. I also liked Ash's friend Zack but he got to be a little too much at time. He is to be had in small doses. The story itself I did like. It was a battle of good vs evil with a love story weaved in. It did take a while to get into to. The first half of the book while not bad, felt really slow and drawn out. There wasn't much action and what little there was felt bland. Also I was disappointed in Selene's character. There wasn't much to her and even though she said she loves Lannie (real name Iolanthe) and wanted to be with her while she grew up, I just didn't feel the emotion. It felt as meaningful as if the words came from a 3rd cousin you only see once a year. But once the story got to Lannie's birthday ceremony, it took off. I don't want to give too much away but there was a twist I didn't expect and the story took an interesting turn that made me not set the book down until I was finished. Dares and Dreams was my first by B.K. Walker and it left me curious as to what else she has to offer. I enjoyed her characters and the story she built.

3.5 stars! I hope to see this become a series., February 5, 2010
This review is from: Dares and Dreams (Paperback)
Set in Northeast Harbor, Maine. As the story opens, twenty-year-old Iolanthe "Lannie" Spenser is mentally preparing herself for her father's funeral. With her is Jack Jones, best friend of her father's and considered by Lannie to be her second father. Lannie has grown up accepting the fact that her paranormal gifts made her different from others. A mysterious woman and her two watchmen (a.k.a. bodyguards) appear often at Jack's bar, Dares and Dreams "D&D", where Lannie works. The woman is Lannie's mother, Selene, who had left when Lannie was but six-weeks-old. Selene is half vampire and half witch. Selene explains that Lannie's gifts are minor compared to what she will soon be able to accomplish. On the night of Lannie's next birthday, two months away, she will come into her full powers. Lannie will be the strongest any of their kind has ever seen. For Lannie's safety, she must join Selene's Coven. The ceremonial dedication is not the only turning point Lannie's life will face. War between their kind is imminent. An evil vampire named Jaracaca, Kind of the Delhi Coven, is determined to make Lannie his own and use her power to expand his kingdom. Selene urges Lannie to allow herself to be turned into a vampire by one of her Coven. Not only would this give Lannie immortality, but it would then be impossible for the King to capture her, bite and be the one to turn Lannie into a vampire, and then be her Master. However, Lannie has recently found love with a very special man named Ash. Ash's dreams only told him where to travel and who to search for. He is a Warlock with no Coven, a drifter. After locating Lannie, he quickly falls in love with her. Ash tries to keep his being a Warlock a secret from Lannie, but some things simply cannot be hidden for long. **** THREE AND A HALF STARS! This story is written entirely in the First Person view. Most of the time it is Lannie narrating; however, it switches to Ash often. Once it even switches to one of the King's minions. Usually the name of the character taking over the narration is written in big, bold print, to warn the reader. Yet there are places that it shifts with no notice. The plot is awesome! It is not too complex, a bit mysterious, and very intriguing. A few of the secondary characters jumped out at me, such as Jareth and Kali, who guard Lannie. I sincerely hope to see more of them in the future. I believe Jareth's tale could be even better than Lannie's. Author B.K. Walker has created a world that is too good for just one visit! **** Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.
