Customer Reviews

Overall, recommend for beginners.

The tubes don't fit well in the plastic casing; every time I open the box, at least half of them fall out.

Other than those small cons, the palette, brushes, paint, etc. work great.

I was excited to review and affordable starter Oil Painting set.

Unfortunately, I quickly ran into problems.

First thing I noticed is that the brushes had stray bristles poking out in all directions. The quality of the brushes is far from acceptable.

Second problem? The very first time I closed the box, it *completely* fell apart. Both sides of the faux wood literally came undone from the frame, leaving a big unusable mess. I'm glad I didn't buy this as a gift or anything, as it would have been very disappointing.

Don't waste your money. Even if your'e buying this for a kid, don't bother. I'm educated in the art field, work as an art teacher, and I have students who have tried to use this kind of paint before. It's really not worth the money. If you're going to spend even $20.00 I would suggest getting a liquitex basics acrylic set of 6 colors (on sale on amazon right now for $10.00), and a nice set of brushes in various sizes. You don't need a palette for acrylic, you can just use a paper plate or my favorite is freezer paper. For watercolor, buy Grumbacher, again a beginner set. Beginners don't need more than 6 or 7 colors. Part of the process of learning how to work with materials, especially paint, is that of mixing colors from a basic set. Don't be fooled by picture, or the "fancy" box this stuff comes in. It's really poor quality material and will only hinder and dissuade people from pursuing art further.

This was a case of it looks like better quality than it is. The case is pretty cheap laminate. The picture shows the paint tube staying in place, that is not going to happen and I assumed that the paint was going to be good quality and t was very opaque. I was going to give this as a gift to someone who paints in water colors a good deal but when I opened it up I decided to give it to my son who thinks it is wonderful. He is 9, just to give you some idea.

NOTE: I received both an acrylic set and an oil set to review. Other than the paint itself and the "medium" (one for oil, presumably a turpentine {tho it doesn't say}, and one for acrylic ~ called a "retarder"), the sets are identical. So my review of items in both sets (below) is the same.

---------------------------------------------------------

REVIEW OF *OILS*:

The oil paints are quite thick and opaque.

The colors are slightly muddy and dull.

---------------------------------------------------------

REVIEW OF *ACRYLICS*:

I typically work with acrylic, but even I'm not sure what the acrylic "retarder" medium is for!

The acrylic paints are quite thin and transparent.

The colors are vibrant.

---------------------------------------------------------

REVIEW OF ITEMS IN *BOTH* SETS:

I am an artist, and a semi-professional one at that (meaning people have paid me money to buy my work), and although I'm particular about some things - my canvas, for instance - I will use pretty much any kind of paint. When these sets came up on Vine to try, I thought I'd give them a whirl... plus, I do have some actual experience/knowledge of the subject.

First of all, although this is technically in a "wood box", the "wood" is crappy press or particle board, covered with some sort of laminate. One of the boxes arrived with a damaged corner, despite being wrapped in plastic and shipped in a sturdy cardboard box.

The hinges and handle and clasps are made of a cheap brass, and I don't see them lasting very long. (My hubby says they are probably more than adequate for what the box is made of.)

The boxes don't actually stay open as the photo shows.

This box is NOT for any sort of even semi-seasoned artist. It's for beginners only, I think. Anyone familiar with good quality paints and art supplies will find most of this stuff subpar. But, for kids or others wondering if painting would be fun for them, it's a cheap (in every sense) way to find out.

The box is thin and flimsy, not made to last or be opened and closed a lot. The brushes are low grade. The paints are not bad, but not great; the colors are occasionally rich but they don't combine exceptionally well.

But, once again, if this is for a total newbie, none of this will matter much. The idea is to see if you like spreading colors on a piece of paper or canvas before you spend a few hundred bucks on serious top quality paints and brushes. To get this many colors of good paint, that's what it would take. Thus, I'd recommend this only to parents of young kids who express interest in painting, or those who just want to see if they have the inklings of some artistic talent.

Because if this simple, low grade kit pleases the artist in you, you ARE an artist! Now go and get the real stuff and give the rest of the stuff you didn't use up from this kit to someone else to try.

The first thing I really like about this watercolor kit is the sturdy, dark colored, wooden box. I've purchased art kits in wooden boxes before and the box of this Darice set is one of the nicest I've owned. Inside the lovely box are a full set of watercolor tubes of paint, a sketch/paint tablet, palette, pencils, sharpener and brushes. The supplies in the box are enough to get anyone who is interested in watercolor painting to get started. For the person who loves to watercolor, the box and paints are great for travel.

I think the watercolor paints themselves are good but not great. The color/quality of the paints is nice but they are not the very best and the same with the paper which warps a little bit with painting but can be flattened under a book. All the supplies in this kit are excellent for practice. An added bonus in the kit would have been a little booklet with tips for watercolor painting but many ideas can be found online.

All in all, we've had fun painting with this kit. Here at home we have lots of brushes to use and found the brushes in the kit pretty decent. The colors are bright and mix well with water and a little paint goes a long way. The box is gorgeous and this kit would make a great gift for the watercolor enthusiast.
