5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever!
I'm a 32-year-old mother of one and I really enjoyed this book. I can so relate to some of the girls in this book-especially Tiff. When I was eleven years old I also thought I was "too big and ugly" for people to like. It's great to know that I'm not the only one who ever felt this way and that there are people out there that I can relate to. I highly recommend this book...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars a bit of a disapointment
This book for young girls started out well, but had a lousy ending that left me hanging.
Abigail tries to reinvent herself at summer camp. She does a decent job of tackling challenges, but unfortunately starts to care more about pleasing her peers than herself. She accepts a terrible dare at the end that has bad consequences. The ending was too vague in my opinion...

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex and haunting - a winner!, November 24, 1999

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Daring to Be Abigail (Hardcover)
This book packs more emotion and realism than books twice or even ten times its length! Abby's struggle to reinvent herself is a universal experience to which boys and girls can relate. When confronted with expulsion from the camp, Abby's cry that she is "not the kind of person who does these things" contains the voices of all children who ever lamented a bad choice with irreversible consequences. That would just about cover every single child I've ever known (including myself). I'm an adult and I cried when I read this book. The picnic scene between Abby, her mother and Jake unlocked all those tears I tried to hold back during all those traumatic camp experiences in early adolescence. Simple yet profound, this complex and haunting novel deserves a wider audience than it's received. To get a glimpse inside the 11-year-old mind (as well as your own), I heartily recommend this novel to girls, boys, moms, dads and teachers alike. Vail is brilliant, and you don't want to miss this triumph!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good book. I reccomend it., September 19, 1999

I thought that "Daring To Be Abigail" was a fantastic book. It really sucked you into what was going on with Abigail at camp, and how unsure she felt about doing mean things to Dana, or going out with a guy that liked her. I suggest it to anyone who hasn't read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit of a disapointment, July 26, 2006
This book for young girls started out well, but had a lousy ending that left me hanging.
Abigail tries to reinvent herself at summer camp. She does a decent job of tackling challenges, but unfortunately starts to care more about pleasing her peers than herself. She accepts a terrible dare at the end that has bad consequences. The ending was too vague in my opinion. I think the author should have written a couple more chapters letting us know what happened to Abby and her loved ones.
If you want to read a terrific camp story that has a more satisfying ending, try Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood by Conford or I Want To Go Home by Korman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Abigail wants her camp friends to think she is brave, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Daring to Be Abigail (Hardcover)
11-year old Abigail enters summer camp with a confidence she has never had before. She wants everyone to think she is brave, so tells them she will never say no to a dare. The dares get worse, and soon Abigail starts bending the rules. Se shaves her legs, and pees in her friend's mouthwash. The one thing Abigail doesn't want them to know is, she is a coward at home!
