Summer Reading List,
By BJ readsalot (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daring Chloe (Getaway Girls) (Paperback)
This book is a must add-on to your summer reading list. When Chloe gets dumped just before her wedding, with the help of friends and family she begins to make some positive changes in her life. You will love the way Chloe gets "back on track" and I predict you might go out and try a few new adventures yourself. I know I will. Chloe and her book club buddies are irresistible. I found myself relating to all of them in some way. If you are not already a part of a book club, you will want to be. Laura Jensen Walker intertwines books throughout the story in a unique and fun way. I have already added some of the books mentioned in Daring Chloe to my summer reading list to either read or re-read. The references to food and the sites in Paris will have you shopping for air fare. I can't wait to add a few new adventures to my life and I especially can't wait for the next Getaway Girls Adventure.

Learning how to Live Life,
By
This review is from: Daring Chloe (Getaway Girls) (Paperback)
Chloe was supposed to be getting ready for her wedding. Everything has been planned from the ceremony, to the honeymoon, to the apartment the couple was to live in. But her fiance chose to text her the night before the wedding and called things off. Now she's living in a rut with nowhere to go. In comes her adventurous friend who suggests that Chloe joins a book club to help take her mind off things. But this isn't an ordinary book club. These women have decided their going to live out their literary adventures doing things they wouldn't normally dare to do. Chloe will have to let go of the predictable life she's lived and be prepared to face the unknown.Laura Jensen Walker's books are always a joy to read. Her stories are always hard to put down and I usually find myself staying up late into the night to finish the novel. The characters are so relatable that you wish you could jump right in and be part of the book. Her latest one is no exception. Chloe's character makes you just want to hug her from the get go. I really detest guys like Chloe's fiance who decide to do the breakup right before the wedding. I felt that this was one of the worst ways to do a break up too. It just irks me how he couldn't let his feelings be known BEFORE all the planning had taken place. I felt Chloe's pain and I wouldn't wish feelings like that on anyone. I love reading books about book clubs. The selections chosen in this book were really interesting and has piqued my interest to look into them. I wish I could be a member of the Getaway Girls Club. They are probably the most energetic and fun to be around group of women I have ever read about. I loved reading about their adventures and wish I could be a part of them. I absolutely loved reading about all the yummy French food. I so wish I could go to Paris now! Between this book and the movie Ratatouille, I am reading to take on France! I think the best part of the novel was seeing how Chloe changed throughout the book. This was one of the most engaging books I have read this year. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out. Anyone who loves books, food and traveling will love this book! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An unlikely adventurer ...,
By Katie (Garfield, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daring Chloe (Getaway Girls) (Paperback)
It wasn't supposed to be the beginning of an adventure. More like the beginning of a life-long dream come true. Chloe's wedding. Except, this dream ended abruptly the night before the wedding when Chloe got dumped. Rather than wallow in self pity - which let's face it, she's earned every right to do - she takes her somewhat reserved self onto her first adventure, her already paid for honeymoon. From there, Chloe and her book club buddies spurred on by ideas in their current readings take on new adventures. Replacing their comfort zone trips to the book/coffee shop, Chloe and her friends trade in their lattes for laughs as they climb way outside the box and experience life in a BIG way.Laura Jensen Walker's novel, Daring Chloe, is just plain fun. It will make you laugh out loud and make you cry (hopefully when no one's looking) - and, sometimes within the span of a page. With unfailing wit and characters that ring true you'll find yourself both entertained and inspired. As for me, I'm thinking white water rafting ...

DARING CHLOE is a darling read! I'm still smiling....,

Chloe survives being dumped just before her wedding - just barely - but will she live through her honeymoon? When she and a couple of gals from her book club go on the cruise Chloe was supposed to share with her almost husband, she experiences adventures she's only read about, including swimming near a shark! But the trip is only the beginning for Chloe, who confronts her fears and learns that there is a great life to be lived beyond the pages of a book.Laura Jensen Walker has crafted a keeper in DARING CHLOE, the first of the Getaway Girls series. I was charmed by the story, Walker's fine writing, and matchless wit. The authenticity of the settings gave it a sense of reality that pulled the reader into every page. I was sorry to see it end and comfort myself that the next in the series, TURNING THE PAIGE, will be coming out soon. Do yourself a favor and get a copy!

I'm a little surprised at the enthusiatic reviews here - this was an OK book; certainly nothing to get excited about. The possibilities were there for some interesting storylines, but they were never followed through. Perhaps that's to come in subsequent novels. Whatever, I don't regret having read this; it was pleasant enough, but certainly nothing here to make me eager to read any more. Very glad I didn't pay any $$ for this one.

Daring Chloe,
By Debbie Fuller Thomas "Debbie" (California) - See all my reviews

Daring Chloe is a great summer read that will have you booking your flight to Paris by the last page. Chloe is an endearing character who is jilted by text message and leaps from her bookish comfort zone into life on the edge - with a little help from her friends. Laura Jensen Walker's snappy prose and beautiful description make us all yearn for adventure, and for good friends like Chloe's.Debbie Fuller Thomas

A Book That Stops at Nothing...And Stays There,

I was looking for something light and fun to read and picked this book randomly and seemed like an intriguing premise and it was a free title for Kindle. The first chapter or so did a good job of drawing me and giving me a main character that was both likeable and relateable. And then the author brought in her main network of friends, who again likeable and relatable. And just when the story should've gotten under way, I felt like it kind of stopped. There seemed like opportunities for things to happen, i.e. roommate drama, a sister who's not so perfect, a boat trip, and yet the author felt like that was enough, like a colorful setting was all that was needed to keep the story going and then we're left with characters sitting around doing nothing but chit chat for the rest of the chapter. Oh and Chloe gets a romance, but apart from the author showing us, she just tells us that there's someone interested in her - apparently showing us a budding relationship would have been way too interesting. The whole book is a set up to isolated bookwormy Chloe going to Paris for a real adventure, and then I thought, "Well, its more than half over, but something is going to happen...finally." Nope. Just the characters talking about how great Nutella is. Sigh. Maybe it was too much of me to expect something more to happen, but in real life, when you travel, things happen. Maybe the author has never run into those kind of things, I don't know. Its disappointing - I wanted something light and fun, and I figured this would be a Christian version of a Lauren Weisberger novel, but instead I got something very bland and unmemorable. There's very little depth and very little to ponder once you hit the last page.

I got about a third of the way through the story when I realized it wasn't going any where. I gave it one more night of reading hoping it would get better and ended up dumping it from my Kindle. The premise is good and the author is a great story teller, but the follow through just wasn't there. Pity.

Nutella Rapture,

This review is from: Daring Chloe (Getaway Girls) (Paperback)
"Daring Chloe" by the sublime Laura Jensen WalkerWhat book lover hasn't wished that they could float down the Mississippi with Jim and Huck? Or be sitting in the courtroom while Atticus Finch gave closing arguments? All her life Chloe Adams has been "Chloe the Timid." The rest of this Adams clan isn't mysterious or spooky, but our little caterpillar is definitely just a bit kooky. On one branch of Chloe's family tree is Julia the perfect. Another little twig is Chloe's cousin Erica, a Nellie Olson carbon copy. Chloe's wedding march towards happily ever after comes to a screeching halt when her betrothed breaks up by text message Chloe is shaken to her core. Her Aunt Tess's sons volunteer to make Chris disappear Soprano style. Fellow Paperback Girls book club babes Tess and Becca whisk her away, on a Mend Your Broken Heart Cruise, what would have been her honeymoon. When Chloe thinks back on how she met Becca flashes of lime green polka dots and a fake red nose come to mind. This fellow book nut works at the local book store, and that's how she made an entrance into Chloe's world. Becca is the friend who would scuba dive for the thrill of a shark encounter. At the thought of a little deep sea diving all Chloe hears is the Jaws theme. When they return from the honeymoon that wasn't Becca and Chloe become roomies at the condo where the lovebirds were supposed to build their nest. At the next Paperback Girls pow-wow the plan is hatched: They'll build adventures around the book club choices. Jane Austen's "Emma" inspires a night of harmless matchmaking, As they go along the escapades become more outrageous and bold. There's a rafting trip in Huck's honor. On a camping trip thanks to "A Walk in the Woods' Chloe is ready to face down a bear for the safety of the others. This tame grizzly is a slobbering Newfoundland. Julia the Perfect is falls off her pedestal when Chloe has to face the "scene of her nightmares" the bridal shop. The last great voyage of the book finds the Paperback/Getaway gals in Nutella rapture in Paris. While there Chloe falls in love--with the Eiffel Tower. And the butterfly starts to emerge from her cocoon in a little chapel in France. There's part of a quote in the book (every chapter begins with a quote), from "French Women Don't Get Fat" "Laughs are like wild mushrooms, they don't come to you." Well, Laura Jensen Walker can serve up laughter and tears on a silver platter. "Daring Chloe" is a slice of heaven for bookworms everywhere. Bookworms are actually a species of tapeworm. As we watch Chloe take flight into her chapter you realize Laura Jensen Walker is the kind of author you want as a tour guide, no matter where she takes you; you just want to be invited along for the ride. "Daring Chloe is a book lovers feast--Bon appetit--it's quite delicious, and it's also tres magnifique.
