Grade 6 Up–When a giant bearlike creature attacks a nearby city, naive, teenaged Dark, heir to the mantle of the Phantom Saint of the Red Phoenix, and Kyo, his sidekick fairy, come to the rescue. Enter Shousama, Phantom Saint of the White Tiger, who decides to get in on the act herself. Eventually both parties race against time and war against each other to protect the nearby land of Nanban from the bear's attack. Dark Angel's black-and-white page coloring often complicates character and setting identification. Also, its page after page of "whoosh" and "kachoom" frames lack concrete detail, making it difficult to understand parts of the plot, especially fight sequences. Overall, though, this is an entertaining purchase that will have readers eager for the third installment.–Hillias J. Martin, New York Public Library
