Premonition of Great Things, July 2, 2004
This review is from: Dark Angel (Audio CD)
Dawn opens Dark Angel with a ripping take on Minnie Riperton's "Reasons," recalling Dianne Reeves at her liveliest. A number of subsequent tracks contrast considerably, helped by the excellent vibes work of producer Joe Locke. Dawn's throaty alto is all musk and mystery, gliding through Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man," Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," and Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." Bob Berg's sax provides the relief, spraying splintered shafts of sunlight through Dawn's nocturnal explorations. Dawn has already performed for or with Nelson Mandela, George Benson, Abbey Lincoln, and Cassandra Wilson; Dark Angel is a premonition of great things. ****

Finally Someone New to listen to, December 29, 2003
This review is from: Dark Angel (Audio CD)
I heard this musician on the radio while in Las Vegas, and bought it right away. She has a very nice style, and the musicians are great on this album. I also like the way she takes standards and makes them her own.
