Anyone who witnessed Kristina Train perform the instant classic that is the title track of her new album "Dark Black' on Jools Holland recently would have been instantly besotted and rushed to the download button. It is one of those songs that you feel you might have heard before with a frisson of some long lost ballad, a hint of J S Bach and something that you can't quite pin down. Its aching melody and wonderfully lush delivery by Ms Train, a New York-born and Savannah, Georgia-raised singer, deserves it to strain under the weight of plaudits and awards.

Kristina Train is not a product of TV music auditions or some "Joni come lately". Certainly there are similarities in the musical space she occupies to Norah Jones (not a bad thing!) but her template is cast from a much more bluesy backdrop. She has paid her dues with some of the best musicians treading the boards including the great Herbie Hancock, Chris Issak and has in the background assisting in songwriting duties the criminally neglected Ed Harcourt and her producer Martin Craft. Her last album "Split Milk" was fine but "Dark Black" raises her game to the premier division. While nothing quite touches the sublime beauty of the title track there is much here to be admired and devoured. The excellent Roy Orbison sounding "Dream of me" sounds like an authentic 50s jukebox ballad where she sings of a "Lonely life" that is "Always caught beneath the wheels/Broken by the night". Her cover of the tremendous Band of Horses ballad "No ones gonna love you" takes a slow turn, with a sparse electronica underpinning and is none the worse for it with a sensitive vocal by Train.

I downloaded Kristina Train's "Dark Black" cd last night and I'm listening to it a second time. I went searching for this artist after hearing a tune (I'm Wanderin')used on a Lexus commercial. Honestly, who listens to or pays attention to commercials? Me, that's who, when I don't mute it. I'm so glad I listen to this commercial. It's difficult to find new talent who haven't been "manufactured" through reality TV shows or YouTube. The more I listen to Kristina Train the more I'm reminded of Peggy Lee (for those of us old enough to remember). If you cross Norah Jones with Peggy Lee, you'll get Kristina Train. I hope to hear more from this artist. I love her original material (except for "I wanna live in L.A". It was "eh") as well as her covers (No One's Gonna Love You and I'm Wandering', especially).

I understand this CD has been reissued. It shows it has on UK Amazon and I'd really like to get the new one but am having no luck finding it in the US. Apparently the new issue will have 3 new songs added to it including Kristina's cover of Aretha Franklin's "I'm Wandering" which is used on the new Lexus commercial. That would be the song I am most interested in. Any information would be appreciated.

I cannot stop playing this CD. I absolutely love it - especially the title track and No. 2 track. Agree with another reviewer - not keen on "I want to live in LA". However - all else is great. Do yourself a favour! Her voice is a mix of Dusty Springfield and Dido - - but brilliant in her own right. So glad I went to the bother of ordering from Amazon - tried to source from local CD store in Albany Western Australia - it was like ordering the moon!

It is rare to find a contemporary album of such great quality and unforgettable vocals. Ms. Train's voice grabs you with its smooth, bluesy tone from the moment you listen to the title track. Train sounds a bit like Dusty Springfield or Bonnie Rait, but her voice is uniquely her own, you can hear a little bit of blues, r & b and country. Train's voice could probably excel in any genre.

Yes this MP3 version of the album contains Train's heralded cover of "I'm wandering" a dreamy, nostalgic that is transcended by Train's otherwordly crooning. But this set is full of gems, including "Dream of Me" an upbeat tune with a great hook. Other highlights are "Saturdays are the Greatest." and "Waltz with me under the sun." This is an exceptional record and I could not give it a higher recommendation.

I just purchased Dark Black and looked forward to hearing the full cut of "I'm Wandering" but it is nowhere to be found. What gives?

Very disappointed, however the CD is outstanding even without all the listed songs. Is there a version of "Dark Black" that includes this song? If so, I would be happy to trade this one in.

Ms. Train's sultry voice is undeniably charming. Her preference to put her vocals on top of subdued instrumentals is classicist (e.g., Dusty Springfield, whom Ms. Train is readily compared to).

The problem with this album, compared to her recording debut, is that the material is somewhat weak. The melodies are simply not as affecting. Several songs are especially flimsy in this regard, especially "I Wanna Live in LA."

Ms. Train would be well advised to put out a covers album next outing, using material that compliments her vocal inclinations, while affording a different take from the original artist.
