Western music for hardcore fans, April 17, 2004
This review is from: Dark & Bloody Ground (Audio CD)
I've owned this album for a couple of years now and, frankly, it keeps getting better and better every time I listen to it (and I listen to it a LOT).
I recently had the honor and pleasure of meeting vocalist Dave Insley when he was appearing at a local club here in Phoenix and I told him that "Dark and Bloody Ground" was still one of my favorite albums of all time. I'll say that again, here (I just did). It's humorous, it's dark, it's gritty, it's quirky, it's a barrel of talent that you are hard pressed to find in mainstream "country" (you know, that Nashville pop machine junk they play on the radio) -- Insley and pal Kevin Daly put it together with a little help from bassist Jeff Farias and they play that Ol' West sound with as much flare as Johnny Cash could do. Insley and Daly sing like country artists should. It's all pure and unadorned, rollicking and wonderful.
This album didn't get played on the radio. These songs aren't for the weak-hearted. There is murder and robbery and range wars and, of course, a truck-drivin' song (with Insley's tongue firmly in cheek). But if you're looking for good Americana with a Western feel, check these guys out.
