3.0 out of 5 stars Not at good as Travis' other books
Dark Child was not as good as I expected. It was not as thought-provoking as his other books. I like the old Travis Hunter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Babies For Sale (token), August 3, 2009
This review is from: Dark Child: A Novel (Zane Presents) (Hardcover)
Black babies are coming up missing and there's no evidence who's taking them. Jamillah, a drug addict, with no hope or future, lost her parent's at an early age, tries to overcome her past by turning to the streets and drugs. Urban Brown, Jammillah's white brother, that once lived a horrid life of abuse, abandonment, murder, and deception overcame his past and became a prosperous, upper-class, and respectable man. Jamillah desperate, and hard on her luck tries to sell a black baby, when this mystery starts to unfold. When Urban stumbles upon the illegal baby-trafficking ring is when he'll risk it all to protect one newborn and bring down this black market operation.
This is a fast engaging read from start of the first page to the last and Travis Hunter draws the reader's attention to one of the world's most illegal practices: the black market of babies. I enjoyed this book, wonderful writing, humorous at times, but I also found myself saddened by the situation Jamillah encountered in her life. Dark Child will have you on the edge of your seat, gasping and guessing, but will leave you ready and eager for his next novel. Five star read and a job well done. Recommended for everyone to read.

The book started off raw, and finished even rawer... This book was very good. how babies are being stolen and sold to the rich... If you want a good laugh, a good cry this is the book to read. Allen was the funniest character and Lawrence was right behind him.. I couldnt put this book down until I finished it. Go head on Travis Hunter, you did your thang with this book, very few errors..I really enjoyed this book. Jamillah was a hero as well, I just think everyone of the characters in this book had an important part. But when the guns started going off, you couldnt have found Jethro anywhere else but down in the seat of the officer's car. That was funny...

4.0 out of 5 stars In The Child's Best Interest, February 1, 2010

This review is from: Dark Child: A Novel (Zane Presents) (Hardcover)
Travis Hunter is back with DARK CHILD and the taboo subject of baby selling to the highest bidder. Urban Brown is a white man who was raised in the foster care system in Atlanta along with his bi-racial sister, Jamillah. Urban counted the days and worked hard to escape the ghetto he was forced into because of the death of his parents. His sister, a once promising track star, stumbled into drugs and stayed in her own self-induced ghetto. One evening Urban receives a call from his foster mother who reveals the latest shenanigan of Jamillah's. She has a six-month old baby boy. With a special place in his heart for children, Urban takes the child as his own. From here several developments occur: Urban's sister wants the baby back and their foster mother wants the baby while several poor women and teenage mothers in rural Georgia are being coerced into relinquishing the rights to their children.

DARK CHILD mixes intrigue with crime and passion, creating a moving and dramatic novel. The story weaves from the present to the past of the characters, so a fully developed history is told and understood. The dialogue and emotion exhibited is realistic, humorous, joyful and heartbreaking. DARK CHILD presents many questions; however, the most telling - is it truly in a child's best interest or is it for the love of the almighty dollar.

This book was so well written and hard to put down it showed racism is alive and well and some truely want to do the right thing, but just don't know how. I truely loved this story line and any one looking for a good read this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise ending!, January 17, 2011

Aside from a very few minor typographical errors, this book was excellent. This was my first read of this author's work. I had heard a great deal about him and his work - all positive. Dark Child does not disappoint.

I dont have very much experience with drug dealers on a personal level. However, this story is so well crafted I found myself naming an actor that might portray the characters in a movie. The hero of the story, Urban has a very interesting background and an even more colorful family. The story moves through Urban's current life and his past and weaves the past and present to present a full story.

As Urban and his sister Jamillah deal with her drug addiction and a new baby in their lives, they both get dangerously involved in a situation that is far deeper than either is prepared to deal with. They are dealing with trafficking in humans, not for sex but someone is selling little black babies. I dont want to give away too much of the story.

My bookclub has planned a meeting with Mr Hunter for February. I am anxiously waiting to discuss the book with him. Some of the other members have finished the book as well and are expressing the same sentiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving "Dark Child", July 12, 2010
This review is from: Dark Child: A Novel (Zane Presents) (Hardcover)
Okay, a friend of mine picked this up from the library and said, "You've got to read this." The first page intrigued me, but as I continued to read, I connected with all the characters. I'm routing for them all, well not all, but I can't wait to see what they're going to do next.
