Dark Chronicle but not Dark Music!,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dark Chronicle Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
If you have played Dark Cloud 2, and enjoy game music, you may be inclined to pick up this soundtrack, and although it is expensive, there are some great tracks here. Unlike the first game, the Dark Chronicle (to give it the original title the game had) soundtrack is spread over 2 discs, so there's quite a bit for your money. Bright airy tunes mingle with somewhat sadder melodies, as well as faster paced battle music. There's a certain naivety about the compostions here, unlike the darker moods of my favourite game soundtracks (Shadow Hearts and Parasite Eve for example), but it always amazes me how the composers come up with engaging themes constructed around the simplest of melodies, which they have done to great effect here. The most memorable tracks are those for the various dungeons, the best (in my opinion) being the Starlight Canyon as well as the gorgeous theme for the Luna Lab. Sadly though, this soundtrack still suffers from having the tracks being too short. Background music to games is designed to be looped, so it would be nice to have tracks of 2-3 minutes worth of music to enjoy the flavour of each theme. Here, each track fades out as soon as the second loop starts, so the tracks all clock in at barely over a minute each, which spoils the atmosphere somewhat. I guess this is to limit the costs of the album length to just one or two discs, as only the Final Fantasy series (which releases excellent soundtracks) can boast a fanbase big enough to justify sales of 4Cd box sets! Still, it has a lot of appeal, and, as is often the case, Amazon is one of the only retailers selling this particular soundtrack, so if you want it, be quick!
