5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Miami-based thriller
I won't repeat the basic storyline, which is already here in the book description. Instead, I'll just say that the book is a great read and hard to put down. It has a complex protagonist--a very successful defense lawyer, a recovering alcoholic with a secret past. It it set in Miami, and delves into the sordid side of the lives of that city's "beautiful people." It has a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best
I just recently finished Barbara's Parker new book "The Dark of Day".
It is not part of her on-going series featuring Gail Connor, a Miami attorney. I knew that when I purchased this book but believed that I would love anything she wrote.

Well, this book just did not thrill me like her other books have. The main character is another Miami lawyer, but...

I won't repeat the basic storyline, which is already here in the book description. Instead, I'll just say that the book is a great read and hard to put down. It has a complex protagonist--a very successful defense lawyer, a recovering alcoholic with a secret past. It it set in Miami, and delves into the sordid side of the lives of that city's "beautiful people." It has a compromised politician, society high-rollers, an unscrupulous journalist, vulnerable young women seeking a piece of the action, and a shadowy client, who may or may not be guilty of murder. The author takes her protagonist on a suspenseful, roller-coaster ride, as C. J. Dunn tries to find the truth before she loses her reputation or even her life. Highly recommended, as are Parker's early books, also set in Miami, which featured attorneys Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana

I just recently finished Barbara's Parker new book "The Dark of Day".
It is not part of her on-going series featuring Gail Connor, a Miami attorney. I knew that when I purchased this book but believed that I would love anything she wrote.

Well, this book just did not thrill me like her other books have. The main character is another Miami lawyer, but does not have the depth of her previous efforts. The characters were a bit one dimensional and predictable. I was saying to myself "oh, please!"..when reading some of the dialogue. I did not feel a bond to anyone except perhaps the male criminal suspect and the lawyer's ex father in law.

I was able to put this book down over a period of days, when I usually have read her previous books in one sitting.

The book had a lot of potential, but it just fell short of the mark for me. I would give it a 3-1/2 stars instead of 3, but it was not possible with this rating feature.

Would I have bought this book if I had known this? Probably...I like to judge things for myself! But...I would have waited and bought it used when the prices came down a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Legal Thriller, July 9, 2008

Anyone who likes intriguing characters, a plot full of twists and turns, and a tropical Miami setting should read Barbara Parker! Parker is a former Florida prosecutor; her protagonist in this novel is high power defense attorney C.J. Dunn, whose clients are not the only ones with skeletons in their closets. I enjoyed Parker's "Suspicion" series as well, and hope that she will write more books about C.J. Dunn. If you have enjoyed other legal thrillers, try reading The Dark of Day--it won't disappoint you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Barbara Parker novels!, August 19, 2011
This review is from: The Dark of Day (Kindle Edition)
I have read all of Barbara Parker's novels so I may be biased but I am really enjoying this novel as much as the other novels in the Gail Connor series written by Barbara Parker. This is a fun, light read that is an interesting and steamy, intriguing summer fun read! I highly recommend this novel - I get to live as a thin, sexy, young hot lawyer on South Beach!

This was my first time ordering books from this seller. Book was received within 7-8 days and in very good condition - as advertised. Barbara Parker was one of my favorite authors and I did not know about this book and was thrilled to find it and be able to read it after her death.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great, September 19, 2009
This review is from: The Dark of Day (Mass Market Paperback)
While I enjoyed this book, it wasn't up to the standards I've come to expect from the late Barbara Parker.

I thought the character of CJ was totally unlikeable, and her "problems" didn't endear her to me at all. Rather, they had the opposite effect, making her seem weak and pathetic rather than human, which is what I believe BP was going for. I did like the characters of Rick, Judy and Edgar, though I also could've done without the stereotypical Billy, Milo and Kylie.

Also, much of the ending was predictable and easy to figure out, so that was also a disappointment. I kept hoping things would turn out differently since so much of it was obvious as the story unraveled. Unfortunately, that was not to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars joyful, August 4, 2008
This review is from: The Dark of Day (Hardcover)
The author caputered the South Beach lifestyle quite accurately. It was an interesting suspense novel but it dragged on and on and on. Could say more with less words. Even though it was a good story, I'd be reluctant to read more of her work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing new series, July 27, 2008
This review is from: The Dark of Day (Hardcover)
I always look forward to Barbara Parker's books. Couldn't wait to read the latest. Found the new characters interesting to a point but I kept waiting for more. Thought it was a good story line but I wanted more from the main characters. I did like the detective and the uncle who lives behind C.J.'s house. I wanted more interaction between C.J. and Kylie. I felt that the chauffer - Rick Slater needed to interact more with C.J. Didn't like Billy Medina, couldn't see why C.J. bothered with him. Not looking forward to this new character (C.J.) in coming books.

I am a real Barbara Parker fan. Her newest book is not a disappointment. The story line is exciting and as intriguing as all of the "Suspicion of" novels. The twists and turns as well as exciting characters makes one call for more even when this particular story is through.
