grim, realistic and memorable novel about nuclear war, May 17, 2006
This review is from: Dark December (Mass Market Paperback)
This is pretty realistic look at what the old timers used to call "atomic warfare". Written 2 years before the Cuban Missile Crisis almost caused the mushrooms to start blooming on the continental US, DARK DECEMBER holds up remarkably well when looked at today. Alfred Coppel writes a hard lean prose that suits the grim subject matter and he isn't afraid to show the ugly side of humanity. Compared to other novels of this type from the same period such as ALAS, BABYLON (which has dated pretty badly) Dark December gets points for being hard-headed and convincingly gritty. I suppose one of the features about DARK DECEMBER that makes it resonate so strongly--at least with me--is the fact that--as far as I know, and i have read a metric ton of these types of books--aside from THE POSTMAN this is the only other novel abbout surviving an atomic holocaust set in the Pacific Northwest. To a man like me who grew up in Washington state, its even more unsettling to read descriptions such as this from a character who was at McChord Air force base when, "Out towards Seattle it was like a sunrise.Hell, a thousand times brighter than any sunrise I ever saw...the whole sky lit up. I never heard a noise like that neither. Why, when the fireball from the first one went up, there was a wind over a hundred miles an hour." Later this same character describes the refugess from this nightmare:"They come down that road from Tacoma. It was like a river of people, Major. Burned guys, blind guys, guys with no hands. And women and kids all with their clothes burned off, screamin' and cryin'." Like I said, compared to ALAS, BABYLON where about, oh, two people actually die, this is hard hitting stuff.
