"Dark and compelling! Reads much like Anne Rice wrote long ago. It left me begging for more!"

Product Description
Victoria MacKay is seduced by the vampire Johann Nikolai in 16th century Scotland. When she emerges from their evil union, the clash of her vampire nature and the unbridled gifts of her Celtic bloodline make Victoria more than human, and more intimately bound to the living than the undead. For three centuries she is pursued across Europe, Africa and America by Nikolai, and through her adventures witnesses great changes in history while learning the great lessons of undying love and DARK DESIRE.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dark Desire: A Vampire Novel, May 26, 2004
By Midwest "horrorfan" (Kansas City, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This book is a really bad pseudo-gothic (and I don't mean goth) romance. Full of characters breathlessly declaring whatever for each other and then declaring it to someone else 2 pages later. I decided about halfway thru I had wasted enough of my life on this book and read the ending. I like vampire romances and actually own quite a few but this one was pretentious, overwritten and dull. Buy "Undead and Unwed" if you want a light and fun vampire romp. Or buy any of Laurell Hamilton's earlier stuff if you want more serious. But don't buy this.

1.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't finish this book, January 24, 2005
This is the first of Ms. Moore's books that I've read and it will surely be my last. I made it to page 60 before I had to stop reading it. Parts of it were like watching Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 Dracula movie. I found it difficult to feel anything for the characters. Nor could I truly get a good picture of them. The plot skipped all over the place and I found it hard to follow at some points. I don't recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars a vampiress searching for redemption..., June 3, 2004
Victoria MacKay isn't your average 16th century Scottish woman--a fact which Count Johann Nikolai Valfrey is very much aware of and finds very attractive. Victoria can view a person's entire future with a simple touch, but with the Count she sees only darkness, a darkness which promises relief from this oftentimes distressing gift. Too late, she realizes what Nikolai is offering isn't an escape from her second sight but a trap into the lonely, bloody existence of a creature of the night.

Dark Desire is Moore's first novel in what promises to be a three book series involving the eternally warring vampires, Victoria and Nikolai. Across three continents and three centuries, the two must battle their passions while they slake their thirsts for blood. But whereas Nikolai enjoys the casual brutality of the hunt for more victims of his lust, Victoria longs for a more enlightened existence.

Always struggling to reign in her inhuman appetite, Victoria recognizes she must satisfy her craving for blood occasionally, alongside her desire for love, companionship and fulfillment. The mere mortals touched by the "dark Madonna" are destined never to forget her--unless she so wills it. But Nikolai will never forget her betrayal. His bitter jealousy and possessiveness looms like an ever-present black cloud on the horizon, threatening to drown Victoria once again in his bestial nightmare.

An engaging story, filled with wonderful period details of life in 17th century France, 18th century Spain, 19th century South Africa, and Gold Rush era San Francisco, Dark Desire is a strong first novel. Victoria's journey to find her place among humanity is compelling drama, casting light into the dark soul of a vampiress searching for redemption. Victoria will never let the reader forget her.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but not anything amazing
It was a memorable book, kind of Anne Rice-ish only at a much faster pace and with less character detail, though it's certainly not boring. Worth reading.
