This review is from: Dark Emblem (Deathlands) (Mass Market Paperback)
Like the previous Deathlands title: "Homeward Bound" delved into details of Ryan Cawdor's life, "Dark Emblem" dives into the details of Doctor Theopolis Algeron Tanner in flashbacks. We learn the events that happened as Doc was time trawled forward from the 1860's to the year 1999 by the team of scientist for the Totality Concept. One scientist being Dr. Silas Jamaisvous. We learn about the torture that went through Doc Tanner's mind has he is thrusted into a world completely different than his own. Then taken from this new worlds and thrusted again into the future that is known as Deathlands. Dark Emblem answers many questions on why Doc is what he is. What the book lacks in action it makes up for in an explorative story of an integral main character.

I have read and own every one of James Axler's books (Deathlands, Earthblood, and Outlanders) and this one is no different: Great reading and I put it down only to sleep if I must. For the guy who's harking on the Glock with a safety...realize these are also fictional. :) Just picked up "Separation" today and am 1/4 into it already.

I've read about three or four novels in the Deathlands series now, and while his writing style is decent, I've found him lacking in his knowledge of Weapons. A Prime example of this would be that in a short scene in the Dark Emblem, Doc Tanner grabs a GLOCK handgun off of his unconcious captor, in the next scene, Doc is described as putting the gun down the front of his pants for safe keeping and makes sure the SAFETY is on. Glocks do not have a safety that can be turned on and off. Glock Firearms come equipped with a safety built into the Trigger, this is a totally unique design and is one reason of many reasons why the Glock is so popular. Also, The Sig-Sauer that Ryan Cawdor Uses, the 9MM with built in Baffled Silencer, doesn't exist. I feel if James Axler is going to use real life weapons in his book, he should think about doing some research on them.

This is a long awaited book, the story of Doc Tanner. I especially like the way he tied the past with the present, theirs not ours. Do not want to give away the ending, but it was predictable. YET! Still left you wanting more.

This book fills in some gaps very nicely, even going back to the first novel as well. The whole Doc Tanner storyline is written so damn well, it rings true and sorta stays faithful to what has been written before. It's what really stands out about this book, it's almost like coming full circle. The tie-in bit with Outlanders brought a smile to my face, it's good to see some attempt at continuity both within, and between, the two series. It was well executed and unexpected too. If you've lost your faith in the Deathlands series lately then get this book, you won't be disappointed. Maybe not quite the best one yet but it sure is up there...

Best in years,

"Dark Emblem" is the best Deathlands novel I've read in years, maybe the best ever. Full of high adventure, unusually deep characterization (unusual for a Deathlands book) and tragedy, this story finally explains why Doc Tanner was time-trawled from the 19th century to the 21st.It repeats a scene from Outlanders #4, this time from Doc's point of view and more or less links the two series for the first time. The villain, Jamaisvouz is a far cry from the usual crazy baron and his ultimate fate is a real kick. I hope Axler can figure out a way for him to return. "Dark Emblem" is the only book in the Deathlands series which brought tears to my eyes. My congratulations to Axler for this book. It was a long time in coming.

A glimps into Doc Tanners Past....,

Kudo's to the new author who wrote this novel. It's similar in the formula to all the others in the series in the aspect that Ryan and the group jump blindly to a new redoubt, explore and encounter the enemy, finally making their way back to the redoubt and jumping once again.Well, where this novel differs is the fact that the author explains exactly what happened to Doc Tanner and the time he spent with the Whitecoats before being pushed into the uncertain future of the Deathlands. The main antagonist in the novel isn't your typical power mad baron either. Over all, I was VERY impressed with this novel and I would have to say that it was probably the best Deathlands I have read to date. And that says a great deal. And, who better to review the book than the owner of one of the biggest Deathlands Websites on the net? The Deathlands Web Survival Guide.

A good story with little action.,

This was not a bad story, but not one of the best in the Deathlands saga. There was too little action and not enough survival settings that marks this series as such. But the story was good but I know enough about Doc Tanner to make me puke. Get on with the action/adventure and muties!
