Book Description

A Serial Killer Plagues an Island Paradise

Vigilante detective Emily Stone continues her covert pursuits to find serial killers and child abductors, all under the radar while shadowing police investigations.

Emily searches for an abducted nine-year-old girl taken by ruthless and enterprising slave brokers. Following the clues from California to the garden island of Kauai, she begins to piece together the evidence and ventures deep into the jungle.

It doesn’t take long before Emily is thrown into the middle of murder, mayhem, and conspiracy. Locals aren’t talking as a serial killer now stalks the island, taking women in a brutal frenzy of ancient superstitions and folklore. Local cops are unprepared for what lies ahead. In a race against the clock, Emily and her team must identify the killer before time runs out.

Reviews:

"An intriguing alpha-female heroine... impressive action scenes and taut suspense." - Kirkus Reviews

“Author Jennifer Chase takes the reader into the world of black magic, sorcery, child porn, murder and the Dark Mind of a serial killer with an ending you just won’t see coming with a final twist that let’s you know that there is much more in store for Emily and Rick. Where the next case leads them only author Jennifer Chase knows and we all hope to find out soon." -Fran Lewis, Book Pleasures

“Okay, think HAWAII FIVE-O meets CRIMINAL MINDS, meets CSI. Sort of. Only much, much better because this author captivates and charms the reader with her many impressive writing skills—particularly for setting the scenes. And even as she engages the reader with vividly descriptive sights, smells and feel of the enchanting island of Kauai in Hawaii, she ratchets up terror, tension and suspense. Immediately, she hooked me by placing me into the tense atmosphere of an interrogation room—engaging all my senses with great sensory images. And then she follows up with a horrific captive scenario, some nasty crime scenes, nail-biting confrontations and plenty of well-researched police procedural action plus a corker of a plot that kept me guessing; just what I love in a crime fiction thriller. And the short chapters keep things hopping. I like that, too. I was definitely captured and seduced by the prose—very well done, and with thorough research into Hawaiian culture." -Highly Recommended by reviewer: Jan Evan Whitford, Allbooks Reviews

Editorial Reviews

Review

Jennifer Chase does not disappoint in this remarkable mystery murder novel. The plot is well thought out and the chapters flow nicely from one subject to the next. The descriptive words and the use of imagery immerses the reader directly into the story among serial killers and evil perpetrators. The tension build-up blew me away as I could not put down this novel because I was so entwined in the mystery and suspense. I felt as if I was right by Emily and Rick s sides as they put the puzzle pieces together in tracking down a sadistic serial killer. This book had me on the edge of my seat in fear and contains many twists and turns that I had not seen coming. I absolutely love a great mystery murder novel and could easily see this novel turned into a television series or motion picture movie. I highly recommend this book for all avid mystery readers and am greatly looking forward to the next novel written by Jennifer Chase. --Reviewed by Rita V for Readers Favorite

Cruelty has no shame, and those who hunt those who do evil should have none either. Dark Mind follows vigilante detective Emily Stone, who has set herself to oppose serial killers and those who would do harm to children. Going against the law for her own goals and own sense of justice, Jennifer Chase crafts a story of a woman determined to make a difference at any cost. Dark Mind is a strongly recommended pick for those who enjoy fast paced thrillers. --The Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Reading December 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In Dark Mind, Jennifer Chase has created a psychopathic serial killer who blends purposefully into local society, and only lets people see the more normal side of his persona. Perhaps that's one of the primal fears shared by many of us - that our own neighbours or locals might be capable of the horror that Jennifer Chase's Dark Mind shows us is possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spine-Chilling Thriller April 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a terrific read from start to finish. The writing is impeccable and the story is fresh and tight. Emily stone is fragile and tough. She dispays a vulnerability most protaganists aren't allowed to expose. It's nice to read a story which doesn't follow a formula. The description of the island and it's surroundings rang true and the killer's identity was a complete surprise. Very solid thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Weighty topics, multi-directional plot March 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The rescue of a kidnapped child in Hawaii is just an introductory adventure in Jennifer Chase's Dark Mind, another in her Emily Stone series. Slow-moving island police and slow-thinking FBI don't seem to see the significance of a gruesome murder. Soon a serial killer's on the loose but even that's only one strand of this multi-directional tale.

An analyst's attention to detail delineates each of the characters' thoughts and actions through scenes both calm and tense, till fear washes "over Emily like a movie scene on fast forward..."--the scene carefully described. Wiser than regular police and FBI, this investigator knows where to step, how to escape, what to listen for and what to ignore. She's shot at, misunderstood, flung from a cliff--Emily Stone certainly leads an exciting life.

Island cop Lani might struggle to catch up, but his instincts are good. Meanwhile lover Rick and close friend Jordan, both seasoned investigators, offer aid, while murderers, psychiatric patients, mystical old men and assorted criminals add to the cast.

Some odd word choices and heavily weighted details slow down this story, as does the urge to say "don't go there" or "switch off your phone." But the action's well-imagined, the details are clear (even to a knife slipping into intestines) and glossary of Hawaiian words is a very enjoyable bonus. Made for TV perhaps rather than movie, Dark Mind has a strong female protagonist, lots of scenes of women in danger, and a prevailing darkness despite the exotic locale. By the end, most threads are neatly tied, while one retains the promise of more books to come.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not sure what book the other review are for... November 10, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
But it can't possibly be this one. It seems like it is unedited. The POV switches without rhyme or reason. I read a lot and get a lot of books from new writers. This one was a major disappointment. Grammar, syntax, spelling, the errors abound.

I was thrilled with how this story starts out, and how it never seems to die down, always fast paced and definitely heart pounding!
Jennifer Chase has a twisted imagination, (a 5 star imagination;), and a fascinating writing style, that keeps you wanting more! I guess it helps a bit that this is certainly my speed, my most favorite genre of all. The story was perfect, very different setting, place then what I am used to, and the terror was genuine! I am not however much into series books, at least when it comes to detective stories, FBI, although this didn't bother me one bit. It sure isn't Nancy Drew, or for the faint of heart!
The story really moves and is filled with vicious descriptions, so if you aren't one to read a serial killer book that also goes through the eyes of the killer, you may not want to pick this up! (although you are missing out on a thrilling ride!) I have to say that I haven't seen this writing style before, and I was real impressed with the adjectives used, how they were placed and the blood curdling screams that I could actually hear while I read it. I particularly enjoyed the explicitly detailed descriptions of the killer, his thoughts, his tools, and the chapters that start out with the women who he was hunting, running, and trying to get away. You could feel and smell every tiny section of the victims mind, fear, what they saw, you have to almost wonder how in the world did someone write this in such a horrific way!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Suspense Thriller! April 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Vigilante detective Emily Stone and partner Rick Lopez are on the pursuit of a child slavery ring that abducted a nine-year-old girl from San Francisco, which leads them to the paradise island of Kauai. The leads they have take them to an out-of-the way ramshackle of a building, where not only do they save the girl they went to rescue, but also another little girl that was being held captive. With the child slavery ring busted and the abductors in jail, Emily and Rick thought they would enjoy the island paradise ... that is until the brutal sacrificial murders of a couple of young women has a serial killer on the loose, and Emily and Rick find themselves back in business with their covert investigation to hunt down the serial killer. Will Emily and Rick find the serial killer before he strikes again? Will Emily and Rick be placing themselves in danger? Will their latest covert investigation lead them to a possible deadly outcome on the island paradise?

Dark Mind is a fast-paced chilling crime thriller that will captivate you and leave you sitting on the edge of your seat as you turn the pages. The storyline is well written, the author weaves a story that is intriguing and keeps the reader guessing what will happen next with every gripping twist and turn. The attention to detail in regard to the crime investigation is first rate, the author utilizes her experience in the criminology and forensic areas to provide a story that diehard crime thriller fans crave. The description of Kauai's setting is breathtaking, it took me back to when I vacationed there many years ago. The characters are realistic, their complex personalities and interactions with each other gave the story depth and made it that much more powerful and compelling.
