5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book that got me hooked!!!, July 21, 2011
This review is from: Dark Harbors (Kindle Edition)
This was the first taste I had of Mr. Hopkins. When I opened the cover and began reading, I was immediately interested. There on the very first page..."A ghostly image in stone calls out to a lost love...", "A mysterious entity rises from the sea, beckoning to a searching soul", "A ghost train rears out of the misty gray morning..."...and others! I had to keep reading. About 250 pages later, I knew I was a fan for life. Mr. Hopkins entices his readers with a variety of supernatural and mysterious circumstances, plots, and characters. He pulls at all sorts of fears and emotions, leaving you breathless and needing more. If you have not read anything by Howard Hopkins, PLEASE start here! You can get a wonderful sample of his exquisite writing in his vast array of short stories. This is NOT your average ghost story...or should I say ghost stories! You will not regret reading this book! You WILL however become a fan and want more...LOTS more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, July 9, 2011

What a wonderful book! And for only 99 cents!
Mr. Hopkins keeps his reader's on the edge of our seats by writing stories that are not only polished but quite scary.
I can't pick out which stories I liked best because there was not a dud among them.
One thing the author writes about is love lost and what happens when people grow apart.Another topic is supernatural occurrences in Dark Harbor,Maine.I love reading about the supernatural and ghosts and the author includes these stories just in the right amount.
We really get a chance to visit and learn about the characters in Dark Harbor by his excellent portrayal of peoples imperfections. While a lot of authors who write collections fall back on topics like serial killers and the like Mr. Hopkins does not do this(thank god)His stories are eclectic and perverse.
Anyone who is interested in very high quality horror/supernatural stories should but this book.I am currently downloading some of the authors other works and so far I am very pleased.

This book is a collection of short stories that never fail to grab you in their first few lines. There are some truly frightening moments, moments of the pain of unrequited love, ghosts and just about any other horrible situation the human mind can conceive. This author provides it all. The book is a treat for the horror lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars DARK HARBORS, March 29, 2007

5 Daggers

DARK HARBORS is a collection of 26 beautifully written horror stories.
Mr. Hopkins has shown great diversity in the subject matter of each
story. His writing talent never ceased to amaze me. No two stories are
alike, and each one has it's own power to draw you in and hypnotize
you. Although short in length, each story has a way of making you feel
like you have just read a full-length book, as Mr. Howard has said so
much in so few words. Each time he takes you on an adventure, which
leaves you completely in awe.

How one man can have such an extensive imagination to be able to write
such stories is amazing. But he does, and he did a fantastic job.

I could relate to the feelings that the characters had, the ones that
got them into the situations that they got into, but the terror that
these feelings brought out were beyond description. The father who felt
he had nothing now that his wife was gone, and the son who felt
overwhelmed with having to care for him. A mother's love for her lost
daughter, a guy who deserves to die, and perhaps does. The guy who
hates his grandmother, and the fisherman who is so full of hate, and
selfishness. There are more, so many more, and all just as complex and
scary.

All of these characters have the same flaws, the same pain that most
people do, but what happens to them because of these flaws and pain is
something you will not want to miss.

The only thing that I will warn you of, is do not read this at night,
alone. Not if you want to sleep afterwards that is. But do read it.
You will not be in the least bit sorry you did. Especially if you are a
horror fan, because this is definitely the best collection of horror
stories I have ever read. I am not a horror fan, and I loved it.
Stephen King has nothing over Howard Hopkins in the horror field.

I do know that I will not be visiting Dark Harbors, Maine anytime in the
near future. Mr. Howard has already taken me there, through his book,
DARK HARBORS, and totally scared me out of my wits. And I loved it.
