As a horror film, (even as a no-budget first-time effort) Dark Harvest is an atrocity on all accounts. It is an endless barrage of poorly scripted and clumsily directed cliches that fail to entertain beyond it's campy ineptness.
In addition to flat and lifeless cinematography, the film boasts an editing style that emulates the pacing and creativity of a 1950's classroom hygiene film. The dialog is abysmally bad and given little credibility by a poorly directed cast of amateur actors. To be fair, the old adage that 'an actor is only as good as his/her script' should be noted -- meaning that the writer/director should be held accountable for the majority, if not all, of this mess.
Even the intellectually challenged and undiscriminating gore-hound will find little, if anything, of value in Dark Harvest, as the special makeup effects are the bloody equivalent to an Ed Wood flying saucer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painfully terrible horror film in every aspect, April 21, 2004
This review is from: Dark Harvest (DVD)
Dark Harvest is an incredibly terrible horror film in every aspect. Bad acting, inept direction, poor special effects, horrible cinematography and fake looking lighting.

I wanted every annoying character in this movie to die off fast so this movie would end quickly! The scarecrows looked so laughable that it was almost unreal. It looked like they bought skeleton masks at Wal-mart during Halloween and used them for this movie. The fake blood looked more like chocolate syrup with cherry sauce mixed in. The lighting in the movie looked so forced and fake that it constantly reminds you that this is a movie. During the outside night scenes it's obvious that there are high-beam lights (spot lights?) shining on the actors and background. Whoever it was that handled the lighting should quit that business for good.

The script for the film seemed like it was written up in one night, seriously. We are talking really bad dialogue and characters here! I can't think of a single redeeming feature for this piece of garbage. If you're looking for a good horror film with Scarecrows get "Dark Night Of The Scarecrow" (1981) or "Scarecrows" (1988). Leave Dark Harvest to the crows......

This is THE worst film that i have ever seen (and i have seen blairwitch 2!) it has got to be the worst film ever made. i have even taken the time out of my life to warn you appreciators of good films not to burden yourselves with the shame of watching it, the acting is incredibly bad as is the camerawork (what was the director thinking?). this film is so bad it does not even warrant the 1 star which i gave it. PLEASE do not even think about seeing this flik 4 the sake of film buffs everywhere infact if you see it in a shop just burn it. simple as that!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Corn, August 6, 2004
This review is from: Dark Harvest (DVD)
Dark Harvest is an amazingly inept way to take an interesting idea and completely defile it. Wisely shying away from the old run-of-the-mill slasher formula, the film adds a supernatural touch while attempting to build a mood where you anticipate how the story will play out. It's an unfortunate thing that... nothing at all happens. As the film loses any type of momentum, the plot diminshes to scarecrows in bad makeup chasing scantly clad young adults with sharp objects. At this point, I expect the acting in these grade Z horror films to be bad, put I expect that the cast look like they're trying to emote... something. The actor's in Dark Harvest look like they barely care that they're being chased and killed. To call this film corny would be too kind, to call it disasterous would be quite a bit more accurate.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Shameful -- Absolutely Terrible!, August 6, 2004
This review is from: Dark Harvest (DVD)
Name a horror film and I've seen it. I love the great ones and love the bad ones, but this wasn't bad -- this was bloody and utterly aweful (the acting, the camera work, the tragically rotten script, the "special effects" i.e. a guy in a mask). One of the reviews here is so obviously someone involved with the film that I just had to write this review. And to the actress with the "British" accent -- PULEEEZE! Do not rent this movie. Do not buy this movie. Do not even waste your life reading the description on the back of the DVD case. this could be topped by a bunch of high school kids with a free weekend and zero talent.

1.0 out of 5 stars They shoot producers, don't they?, May 12, 2004

Absolute garbage from the 'git-go'. Not a single frame
of originality in the entire film. One can only pity
the amatuer actors that have to list this film on their
resume.
Even the director/writer thought he could do a 'Hitchcock'
by giving himself a small role in the film. Don't give up
your day job, Mr. Moore. Anything more creatively demanding than a Walmart sales clerk would be quite a stretch.

1.0 out of 5 stars 'Dark Harvest' is more low-brow than low-budget., April 23, 2004

`Low budget' is no longer an excuse for incompetent filmmaking. Sam Raimi, George Romero, Toby Hooper, etc., without the advantages of the digital revolution, managed to produce the shoestring horror classics that modern filmmakers continue to plagiarize on a daily basis. When the biggest obstacle facing today's first-time filmmakers is talent and perseverance the producers of `Dark Harvest' can be credited for perseverance, and little else.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh, the horror - and not the good kind..., April 21, 2004
By
Adam Robinson (Huntington, West Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dark Harvest (DVD)
Not all that long ago, I was a theatre major at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. I remember a couple summers ago, some friends of mine in the theatre told me about a little indy horror flick they were working on called "Dark Harvest." I was pretty excited to see what they had accomplished. Now that I have finally seen "Dark Harvest," I must say... Well, uh... Damn. As much as I'd like to tell you all that this is a wonderfully directed, edited, scripted, etc. horror film, it just isn't. "Dark Harvest" is an absolutely abysmal piece of trash, that should be removed from every store in America (and god forbid this crap should end up in other countries). If any of you that worked on this flick are reading this, and you know me and wonder just why I would go Judas on you... Well, I'm sorry, but you made one very terrible film. No, calling this a "film" isn't right; hell, it isn't even a movie. This is a flick, and a most atrocious one at that. You've already read why in the many other reviews already posted here, and possibly elsewhere on the web. Therefore, I won't repeat the reasons for this flick's craptacular nature. I would say "you just have to see it yourself," but I would be a terrible critic indeed were I to say such a thing. No, you would be better off skipping this flick altogether; don't even rent it. If you absolutely must see this flick, know this: you have been warned.
