5.0 out of 5 stars The second book
I asked Margaret Weis about the second book (see www.staroftheguardians.com for her addie) and she said that due to the death of her son David Baldwin, she would not continue the series, as it was more his work than hers, and it would not feel proper to use his ideas. It was his project. There is a prequil or similar called Testament of the dragon, but i think it's only...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book-but should have a sequel, May 29, 2004
This review is from: Dark Heart: Book I of Dragon's Disciple (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought this book was really good-well written, lots of action and a good plot. But it deserves a sequel! I was very disappointed to hear that Margaret Weis is not continuing the series-I'm not sure if people will like reading this book wehn it doesn't really have an ending. She should have written at least one more book and given us some closure. It's still a great book though, in my opinion. It just doesn't have a good ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to meet the dragon!, August 8, 1999
By
This review is from: Dark Heart: Book I of Dragon's Disciple (Mass Market Paperback)
Margaret Weis, creator of the now best selling Dragonlance novels, has put her pen to work writing about a new type of dragon here in the 20th century. Her work introduces us to Justin Sterling (my only gripe in the entire book is the name for this character and that is just personal) a disciple of the dragon.

The story is woven with police intrigue, power stuggles between other dragon disciples along with Justin and the life of a survivalist, Sandra a cop investigating strange murders which eventually bring her to Justin.

The book is well paced and lively, I finished it in about a week durring a busy work time. I wanted to spend more time reading this book than working.

Each character flows seemlessly into the story and each has his or her place. I would almost call this a channeled work due to its intuitive reading nature. Margaret put so much thought into each one that you can feel their deepest desires and hidden desires as well as those which are closer to the surface.

For those of you skeptical about reading some of Margaret Weises works outside of the Dragonlance theme, this book will not dissapoint you. As a long time fan of Weis, I am glad to see that she has lost none of her spark in her writing from editors, deadlines and such.

PS The Dragon in this story is quite a new twist to dragon genre and very original! I wish I had thought of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, November 28, 2001

Margaret Weis seems to have no shortage of original great ideas. Its not often you see a fantasy book in our modern times. Even when you do seem a book like that, its not well written. This is a definite exception. I could have used a bit more detail on Justinian's life, but thats what the rest of the trilogy is for right? Hopefully they'll get around to writing the rest of it. I look forward to the next book anxiously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Heart, July 3, 2000

This was one of the best books that I've read. I love all of Weis's books especially the Darksword seies and this one. The only problem I found is that I am so anxiuos to get the next one in the series. Also I believe that this could be an awsome book to movie. I would love to see what todays technology could do with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, September 16, 1999
This book has a intricate plot and a unique veiw on our world. It has meaning beyond that of the avreage fantasy story- but still, is smooth to read. I read it all in one night, staying up til 4 am, and wasnt even sorry i had done so in the morning. I would recommend this to anyone i know, whether or not they were regular fantasy fans- and i cant wait for the sequel. Its like sitting on pins and needles waiting for it! Definately the best Urban Fantasy i have ever read, and its up at the top with the rest of the books i have ever read, fantasy or not!

3.0 out of 5 stars A solid book to read, January 10, 2001

This review is from: Dark Heart: Book I of Dragon's Disciple (Mass Market Paperback)
Margaret Weis and David Baldwin, team up in this creation of a modern day fantasy slash detective story, filled with dragons and legends. This is my first time reading anything from David Baldwin; however, for Weis this book falls a little short from what I have come to expect from an excellent writer. The book, which was written very solidly, decent plot, decent characters, falls short in several areas.

The characters were solid, yet they didn't seem to spend any time getting to know them. Especially the main two characters Justin and Sandra. I think a little more in depth writing on their past, and on their current interactions could have helped the story. Also, the plot in regards to who needed to be killed and why, didn't really make to much sense. The murders themselves seemed to bring more attention to what was trying to be covered up then was actually known by the ones that were killed. The last thing that bothered me was that the China connection was brushed over. It left part of the people involved in the story a complete mystery to the readers.

Overall the book was worth reading and I recomend it to anybody who likes to read fantasy stories. I did enjoy it despite some of the above things gnawing at me as I was reading through the book. They did leave the story open to be continued and I suspect the next book will be more in depth, better written, and worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, February 22, 2001

This review is from: Dark Heart: Book I of Dragon's Disciple (Mass Market Paperback)
This book completely absorbed me. I have stayed up until 4 or 5 am more then once reading and re-reading it. Unfortunately I am beginning to suspect that a sequel is not forthcoming. I did find a companion novel, but no sequels- I need a sequel desperately!
One of the reasons I love this book is the way it has been so successfully anchored in the 'real' world. It is fascinating reading about how The Dragon has influenced the history of the world for the worse through his disciples. If you don't have any knowledge of the history of world events in the past 100 years, you loose alot of appriciation for the novel.
I became very fond of the two main characters, Sandra and Justin. It was interesting being able to see into the minds of two such complex people. I don't want to give deatails and spoil the storyline, but I will say that every move each character made, up until the last page, was completely in character and in sync with the plotline without seeming at all forced.
Now that I think about it, that description fits all the characters in the novel.
I would definately recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new direction for Weis, July 9, 2000

This was a wonderful book, blending fantasy with modern day crime novels. It leaves you wanting more. I am waiting impatiently for the sequel. Weis may capture a whole new set of readers with this series -- those who are not necessarily into the Dragonlance books -- but are readers of fiction set in today's world. She has blended the dragon storyline into it effortlessly.
