A solid game, it definitely is more for the collector or aficionado of the genre than the casual gamer.
While similar to Freelancer in many respects the game universe isn't as diverse and the storyline isn't as adaptive. I enjoyed it because of the game controls and the unique subject matter (games like this are harder to find than they should be!), so as long as you know that going in you'll probably enjoy it too. Yes, it does support joysticks for those who are sticklers for such things! Recommended with caveats--this is a lighter, shallower game than Freelancer or Privateer, so know what you're getting.

Where do I begin? It's all terrible, really. Gameplay consists in nothing but constant dogfighting with no discernible strategic or tactical component -- to call it a brain-dead button-masher would be a massive insult to some mediocre, marginally fun brain-dead button-mashers I've run into. The story... well, there seems to be one, but the stiff narration and absolutely nonsensical dialogs do their best to leave you uncertain.Tell you what -- slap yourself repeatedly in the face. The overall effect is the same, but you keep your money this way.

Nothing to set it apart from the rest of the pack,

It looks very nice but in this day and age of overloaded graphics cards that is not anything unexpected. A fair degree of Superman Syndrome yes you have Wingmen but they aren't worth a whole heck of a lot. The plot is interesting the idea of the very destruction of reality itself is very cool but it never really develops beyond blowing up "X" number of ships during any given mission.
