I first read this book in college and didn't know how important it's message would be to me throughout my life. John captures the true heart of God toward his people through an allegory involving horses.
A short, but well-written page-turner, the point of this book is that things are not always what they seem . . . and that following the road-less-traveled, though rocky, will ultimately lead you to find what you are truly seeking. Well done, John.

Fischer paints a poignant word-picture of the struggle every individual faces: being right versus being honestly myself. The book was first published as an affordable paperback in the early 1980s and more recently republished as a hardback. Wonderful gift for high school or college graduates.

You can never be too young for this one. I actually found myself reading it twice. I seldom do that to a book. Good LIGHT reading.

This world is filled with false messages. We have been warned of this for centuries. The most tempting one is the voice in our own head that tells us what we should look like and strive to be. Using the long held tradition of making a point relevant to humans through the use of animals, the author tells the story of a group of horses held captive by the desire to be what they almost are, but not quite. Then, they escape and go on a journey of discovery, following a myth to the light. Freedom is close, but only if they can overcome the deception. ** By its size, you might be tempted to dismiss this book as one for children, but the point it has to make is one that can be more fully appreciated by someone older. Yet, the lesson can not be learned too young. ** Reviewed by Amanda Killgore |
