5.0 out of 5 stars Book with a cliffhanger ending
I won't go into the story line ...

Dark Hunger is Book 2 of the Brethen series, and you could get away with starting with this one, but reading book 1, Dark Thirst, helps with a lot of the background. Also Brandon and Lina, are in this one quite a bit and having their background will be helpful.

This book picks up where that one left off...

I won't go into the story line ...

Dark Hunger is Book 2 of the Brethen series, and you could get away with starting with this one, but reading book 1, Dark Thirst, helps with a lot of the background. Also Brandon and Lina, are in this one quite a bit and having their background will be helpful.

This book picks up where that one left off.

This story is Brandon's twin sister Tessa and and Rene, Lina's old partner. I enjoyed this one as much as the first one... it's another unique story (with Brandon being a deaf-mute and Lina being African American and Brandon's white) ... In this book, Rene is an amputee, Tessa was abused by her husband. It's finding out that you can love someone else and they'll love you for who you are.

The ending bothered me a bit ... it just didn't seem right, what happened with the one character I think is really what bothered me. Frankly I didn't see it coming, and maybe that's what bothered me.

It put a nice twist at the end ... a cliffhanger. And will be a great lead in to the 3rd book in the series (I hope there's a third book in the series)... I really want to get these questions answered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Read!, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Book Two in The Brethren Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Rene Morin and Tessa Davenant have led very different lives. While both are vampires, Rene had a human mother and was raised to live as a human. Tessa, on the other hand, grew up in the sheltered Brethren world, secluded from the rest of the world. The two are thrown together to protect Tessa's brother, Brandon Noble (see DARK THIRST for more details), from the Elders of the Brethren. Fleeing across the country, will they give in to the attraction between them or will the darkness claim them both?

Wow! Sara Reinke's sequel to DARK THIRST is a stunner! DARK HUNGER picks up right where the first book left off and instantly delves into the dark world of the vampire. I would highly suggest reading DARK THIRST first, however, as the storylines intertwine with an ongoing story arc. One word of caution to readers who want their stories wrapped up neatly: DARK HUNGER leaves with one heck of a cliffhanger! I can only hope that Sara Reinke's next book is coming out soon so I can find out what happens next as the wait is killing me!

Rene is a dark, brooding hero. His actions aren't always "right" and he can be cantankerous at times. But as his history unfolds, it is hard not to fall in love with this Alpha male! His tenderness towards Tessa as her secrets are revealed is touching, even endearing. Tessa's inner strength is also admirable and I cannot praise Sara Reinke enough for addressing such tough issues with her characters. Both Rene and Tessa have obstacles in their lives and Ms Reinke addresses these issues with great sensitivity and realism.

DARK HUNGER is easily a keeper on my shelves! Sara Reinke adds a much needed touch of darkness to the genre as the story borders on dark fantasy. Fans looking for a story they can truly sink their teeth (pun intended) into will thoroughly enjoy DARK HUNGER. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, April 13, 2009
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Book Two in The Brethren Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I eagerly picked this up because I loved the first book so much, but I was really disappointed. The main problem is that the author follows the romance convention of having the next book be about a new couple. But even though Brandon and Lina have come together by the end of Dark Thirst, their story still isn't over yet. They're still on the run from the Brethren, and there are still lots of unanswered mysteries. But this book doesn't really answer many of them, it just brings up new ones. But the bigger problem is that Rene and Tessa are not as interesting as a couple.

What made the first book so great was the way the author inverted the usual romance novel gender roles, with a hero who was abused and inexperienced, and a heroine who was not conventionally attractive. But in this one, she goes right back to the old formula. Tessa is a ballet dancer, a pale, delicate flower, and also kind of bratty and self-centered. Rene is a condescending jerk. He is a RAK amputee, so there is a little bit of "wounded hero" interest, but he's a fairly stereotyped character, not nearly as original or sympathetic as Brandon.

And yeah, the ending is terrible, not just because it's a cliffhanger. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Gripping, intense, fast pased. I could'nt read it fast enough. Suprising, unexpected ending. I'm looking forward to the sequel. I recommend reading the Dark Thirst first. One of my favorite new paranormal authors.

2.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE ENDING, February 3, 2011
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Book Two in The Brethren Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book right up until the end. I liked both Rene and Tessa, I cared about them and wanted things to end up good between them, but NO ONE could forgive the action that took place the end of the book. I just can't see them being a couple in the future.

I also don't mind a cliff hanger, but a cliff hanger that just leaves you feeling very, very angry just sucks, quite frankly. I hate books with bad endings, and this one had it in spades for me. I am not sure I am going to read the third book, right now I am just throughly disappointed in how the author chose to finish this book. Makes me wonder what "wonderful" ending she will have at the end of the next book.

I have read many books in this genre, and this series wasn't worth the money at all,the charecters had a very nice way about makeing me completely angry at how, for lack of better words, stupid they were.I bought both this and the book before it at the same time, and I am upset that I did, after one book I wouldn't have bothered, it was unrealistic and very disappointing, I would suggest something from alexendra avry or someone, if not anyone else

3.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Premise for a Vampire Society, April 16, 2009
By
KiaJG "KiaJG" (Carrollton, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Book Two in The Brethren Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is book two in The Brethren series which is an interesting premise on a vampire society. The Brethren will clearly remind the reader of a polygamist cult. This series is about those members of this society who try to escape.

I really enjoyed the primary male protagonist in this story. Rene is a nice combination of hot bod, bad boy, a bit damaged (emotionally and physically) but powerful. Oh, did I mention he's Cajun? Yes, hotness factor goes waaay up with that one.

Rene's father was Brethren and his mother human. He doesn't know much about himself but begins to discover the truth through his developing romance with a woman who escapes her life from The Brethren. Her twin brother's own escape is the premise for book one in the series and I do recommend that you read the first book before this one if you can.

Overall, a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Hunger!, January 10, 2012
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Kindle Edition)
When pregnant vampire Tessa Noble Davenant agreed to drive to Lake Tahoe, California, with her brother's best friend Rene Morin, she didn't realize what a challenging journey it would be. Rene, half human and half vampire, completely infuriates her with his self-destructive behavior and moodiness.

Rene is equally on edge by Tessa. Not able to sit in a car with her for more than a few minutes without arguing, he has no idea how they'll make it to California without tearing each other apart. But as their car eats up the highway miles bringing them closer to their destination, they discover an attraction that neither of them is able to deny.

Tessa and Rene both have secrets and painful pasts that continue to haunt them on their trip out west, with danger lurking in every shadow. Together they join forces with Tessa's brother Brandon and his mate Lina to battle the absolute darkness that wants nothing more than to see them suffer and fail, making all of them wonder if they will ever be safe again.

Dark Hunger is author Sara Reinke's second book in her highly fascinating vampire series. The first book Dark Thirst showcased the story between Brandon Noble and Lina Jones, although Tessa and Rene had been introduced at that time. Dark Hunger continues where the first novel left off, hurtling the reader along with fast-moving plot and a mélange of emotions as familiar characters are met once again but in new situations.

Both Tessa and Rene have experienced more than their share of pain and suffering in their lives, making them, like their Dark Thirst counterparts, unique and almost physically fragile in the paranormal world, where physical perfection and supernatural strength is par for the course. As this couple found themselves in one dangerous situation after another, I found myself holding my breath fearing for the life of Tessa's unborn child within her.

I cheered while witnessing Rene's internal barriers crumble one by one as his relationship with Tessa blossomed and his masculine protective instincts kicked into overdrive. The sensuality and intimacy between Rene and Tessa is as sultry as Rene's Louisiana bayou roots. The suspense is taut throughout the story, keeping the reader fully engaged from the first page until the mind-blowing conclusion. I eagerly anticipate the sequel that is sure to come. Kudos to Ms. Reinke for another amazing read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money..., January 4, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Book Two in The Brethren Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the very mixed reviews before buying this book but due to pure curiosity I bought it anyway. It was a quick read for me but sucked big time. The first book captured my heart and the second one ripped it to shreds. It would have been better if she never wrote a sequel so to find out there's another one is beyond ridiculous. If you want to waste valuable time and money then and only then should you buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected! I'm hooked!, September 8, 2011
This review is from: Dark Hunger (Kindle Edition)
It's always refreshing to come across a paranormal romance that doesnt follow a prescribed recipe with typical characters and a predictable ending. The ending here was definitely unexpected and if the author takes the opportunity in book three to write a strong story tying everything together and answering all my questions, this will prove to be a favorite series for me. My fingers are crossed as I buy book three!
