5.0 out of 5 stars Still on my best trilogy list
I see that some readers felt dissatisfied with the ending. That's ok. If everyone felt like I do, Hollywood would be out of business. I loved the ending and anyone who couldn't see the potential for such an ending was not paying attention. The clues were there and I wanted the ending to be different as much as Morgan Roche did the entire journey but understood that...

5.0 out of 5 stars Still on my best trilogy list, March 13, 2002

This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
I see that some readers felt dissatisfied with the ending. That's ok. If everyone felt like I do, Hollywood would be out of business. I loved the ending and anyone who couldn't see the potential for such an ending was not paying attention. The clues were there and I wanted the ending to be different as much as Morgan Roche did the entire journey but understood that things do not always work out the way you want them. I was then left with a total respect for the writers ability to let go of the typical ending and have the courage to do something different. I loved these characters with all their talents and flaws and deeply hope to be able to someday return to their world, as I am sure there are many other characters waiting to share their story with us. We still know very little of the Dato Bloc, the high humans and the others. I have no doubts that Williams and Dix have plenty more to share with us. Lead on gentelmen, and we will follow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked again!!, October 20, 2001
By
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
It is not often that after reading the first 2 books of a trilogy that I anxiously await reading the 3rd!! (not since Lord of the Rings)
Having not read a science fiction book for near on 20 years, it was with some trepidation that I pick up the Evergence books. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter and never lost interest or focus right through all my readings. Fast paced, great structure, original and yes a heroine for the main character. This has really got me back into the sci-fi section in my local bookshop. I have loaned the books out to friends ... and they have all been hooked like myself. Looking forward to upcoming books from Williams and Dix.
Highly recommended...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but watch out for the ending, July 19, 2001
By
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
This book makes for an extremely satisfying conclusion to the Evergence sci-fi trilogy. Throughout the series, Williams and Dix constantly move into 'darker waters' as it were, and this third book is the most suspensful of them all. Incredible secrets about Cane and the other clone warriors are revealed, but the most stunning secrets are about Morgan herself...

I give this book five stars and take one off for the most insanely CHEAP ending in history.

EVERGENCE, 3 is the conclusion of a three book set. The novels trace Morgan Roche and her companions through a series of adventures all targeted to discovering the secret of the "clone warriors." Of the three novels, this one falls short of expectations. By the end, readers have invested time to read approximately 1,200 pages total and should be rewarded for their efforts. With very little character development, the 1,200 pages finally get the reader comfortable with the characters, even to caring about what happens to them. But the authors let the readers down in this regard. Without giving away plot twists, final denouement, etc., I could envision at least one or two satisfactory outcomes given the characters and background. On the positive side, the millieu and the extensive universe the authors created was well done. But wasted. The final third of the novel is almost contrived to support the ending. The authors were good enough to plant sufficient hints throughout, but came close to employing "deus ex machina."

4.0 out of 5 stars Australian SF Reader, July 31, 2007
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
Here is what this book boils down to. Would you, a created human, decide yes or no when given the choice by godlike posthumans to destroy a race of superhumans you were at war with? What if the wrong choice meant your death?

Morgan Roche has to make this terrible decision.

4.0 out of 5 stars They fooled me, May 12, 2004
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
It doesnt offen happen these days with the pulp coming out of the movie industry. But these two guys got me, and got me good. Well done mate(s).

As you can read from other reviews, a highly charged ending, but other than that all is explained to a logical end. The question is, will Morgan Roche return?

5.0 out of 5 stars In response, February 10, 2002

This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
I dont normally bother with writing reviews but felt after I read a recent one froma reader in San francisco regarding Dark Imbalance, I had to say something in the authors defense. While I appreciate that everyone has their own opinions on these things I find it kind of arrogant that this reader would say that he cannot believe that a "serious" reviewer would like this book. It almost implies that the opinions of others are wrong and I resent that! I loved this book, and the entire Evergence series. There is nothing even remotely "akin" to "and then she woke up and it was all a dream" or whatever this person suggested. If anything I found the conclusion refreshingly different. I know some people I spoke to didn't enjoy it because of what happened to the characters, but they still enjoyed the book itself and the writing style of the authors. I happened to like the way the series was finished. It took me by surprise because I was expecting something similar to the way most of these series finish up (happy endings which allow the characters to go off and have further adventures). I have heard that it is the intention of these writers to go back and do a second Evergence series which I hope that one day they do because I for one would be out there in the shops on the first day of release to buy them.

Reader from SF suggests these authors should go back and rewrite the last book. I say leave as it is! Evergence trilogy stands out for me as one of the best science fiction series of the last decade. Whether we like the ending or not, it is an ending the authors wanted to write. If reader from SF wants a different ending then perhaps they should go and write a series themselves as they would like to see it. But for my money the ending of Dark Imbalance is NOT a cop out by any stretch of the imagination. It is a well written book which builds to a conclusion that gives the reader (this one anyway) an emotional impact. I urge readers who have not read this series yet not to be put off by such comments by reader from SF. You may not like the ending the authors offer but I think it will be one you'll remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triple-pack of adrenaline, January 24, 2002
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
Maybe I wouldn't consider the Evergence trilogy a literary masterpiece, but it certainly is one heck of a good space opera. The main weakness, I feel, is the main characters' lack of character. Ultimately, they represent super-heroes fighting against a super-enemy. Still, it's a lot of fun, with a successful attempt by the authors to outdo themselves on every page - some plot twists are plainly mind-blowing. The first book, The Prodigal Sun, is actually the weakest, so if you like that one, you're in for a ride. In contrast to some other reviewers, I actually like the ending. It's surprising and refreshingly different! I can remember it far too well now, a rare thing indeed ... And I definitely want a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, July 30, 2001
By
Kelly (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Dark Imbalance (Evergence, Book Three) (Paperback)
I have read all three books and while enjoying the other 2 felt this to be the strongest. Was a wonderful conclusion to the series and didn't pull its punches as so many other books of this type of writing tend to do. The entire series reminded me of the old Brit tv series Blakes 7 and that can't be a bad comparison as that series was one of the best SF shows ever! I loved the way the writers didn't wrap their charcaters in cotton wool -- they were brutal! When I read their next book (she says with fingers crossed that there WILL be another book) I will be reading it wondering who the hell is going to survive!

The writing itself was tight, the characters well drawn, and there was a good mix of action and information dumping. I read it in 2 sittings and by the end I wanted more! I urge anyone who has ever enjoyed this type of Sci Fi to go out and read these books! You'll be in for a treat!
