Editorial Reviews

Dark Island is the eighth release from Birmingham's finest purveyors of dark electronic indie-pop, PRAM. Pram's strange and twisted world takes in the odd and solitary lives of a windswept seaside town in winter. From the angular edges of the Achivist to the melancholy longing of the Pawnbroker, the characters which populate Dark Island harbour peculiar and frightening secrets. The album is a 10 track exotica-delight that will enchant you; all with a recognisable sound, but the big difference this time is space - lots of space permeating the record with atmospheric indulgence. Slinky guitars, glorious brass, sparse bass heavy beats, floating melodies, all with a prevailing pop air. It's wonderful stuff!

Fans of Pram are unlikely to suffer disappointment upon hearing 'Dark Island.' It is more low-key than releases of the mid-90's, although there are some tracks that continue with the retro spy sound of Somniloquy's 'Way of the Mongoose'-- they're even similarly titled. There are also plenty of dreamy melodic tracks with haunting lyrics. All in all, 'Dark Island' isn't as quirky or avant garde as their earlier songs, but the tracks here are consistently satisfying. It's good to see that this low-profile group can consistently turn out rewarding music that is true to form without being predictable or dull. A standout release in the group's ten-year history. More, please.
