Book Description

He'll steal her heart, then take her soul...

The angel of death has a name: Azrael. He also has a purpose, to soothe the souls of the suffering into the peaceful passage of the after life. But in his twilight existence, Azrael has never known peace or pleasure...

Until he meets Sara, the first mortal who can see him in his Reaper form. Charming and spirited despite bearing her own burdens, she intoxicates him with the pleasures of life, even taming his brutal dark side with her fearlessness. But Azrael’s new happiness is short-lived when he realizes Sara’s health is fading. The bright flame of her life is about to be blown out.

And he’s to blame.

5.0 out of 5 stars This reaper is not grim! March 24, 2011

I love this author's work, so it was no surprise that Dark Kiss of the Reaper pulled me right in and kept me turning pages. What really surprised me about the book was how deftly Kristen Painter straddles the dark, emotional, angst-ridden hero with a wry and dry humor that makes it all so entertaining. I loved the banter, the chemistry, and the whole concept of this take on the grim reaper. The heroine grows enormously from beginning to end, taking the reader on a really touching journey that has you rooting for her happy ending all the way through. Beautifully written, perfectly paced, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Kiss of the Reaper August 8, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the three different grim reapers portrayed in this book. Reaper of Mercy - Azreal, and his two brothers - one brother reaps the souls that are evil and the other brother captures the souls that fall in between, who are neither good nor evil. Can the grim reaper fall in love? Have a normal life? This tale takes you through Azreal's tale. The beginning was fast paced. I almost got bored a tiny, tiny bit in the middle, but then the ending was incredible. I had absolutely no idea how this tale was going to end. I will definitely check out Kristin Painter's other books as they come out.

4.0 out of 5 stars simple and satisfying October 10, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I admit it was the cover that first attracted me; and a mortal woman falling in love with the Angel of Death? Wonderful! From the blurb, I expected this to have a Christian-based angel mythology, but the author chose a Greek-inspired one that worked better than I anticipated. Azrael is a Reaper of Mercy, assigned to collect souls The Fates have deemed worthy. When he visits a hospital to reap a soul, Sara sees him - the only mortal who can see him in his Reaper form. Though his brother reapers have indulged in casual flings with humans, Azrael has refused to do so - until his curiosity compels him to learn more about her, and show her what he really is. Sara is skittish after a failed marriage, but it equally drawn to Azrael. But will the Fates allow them to find happiness?

This story didn't bring anything new or unique to the paranormal romance genre, but I enjoyed the simple romance. Azrael and Sara are almost innocent in their love and I found that refreshing. Readers expecting explicit sex may be disappointed. The sex is of the fade-to-black variety that was very fitting for a love story. I liked these characters, and would happily read a sequel. Surely Kol deserves to find love just as Azrael did? Overall, I couldn't put this down and will definitely look for more by this author.

On a side note: despite being a self-published work through CreateSpace, this book is exceptionally high quality. The cover design is beautiful, the paper is bright white and thick, and I only noticed one typo (which is better than many big publishers). Lastly, the price is more than reasonable for a trade paperback. The author put as much care into the publication as the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute... June 1, 2013

....but this book was so unrealistic it ended up being a labor to read at the end. There wasn't much depth of character, no real development between them. It was just "POW" - passionate love. I guess some people like that but personally I need my lovers to have a good reason why they want to jump each other's bones.

I wasn't blown away by this book. I think the biggest problem for me was the stilted/unnatural interaction between the characters when it came to dialogue. In fact even some of the internal stuff was awkward IMO. The story had a good premise, and I can definitely see this author growing into a much better writer. A strong writer technically, just missing that flow for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, Sexy, Magical April 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've loved all of Kristen Painter's books, especially The Perfect Dish, and this one is no exception. A little darker than the others, which I love, especially the hero--tortured, angsty, but so, so in love with his Sara--YUM! His taste in jewelry wasn't too bad either. ; ) There are so many great things about this book: the way the bits of mythology are worked into it in such a cool way, and the parts set in Paris and Vegas were super fun.

I'd recommend Reaper to anyone looking for a fresh, exciting new take on paranormal romance, who loves a hero on the dark and dangerous side! (And really, isn't that everyone? LOL!)

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a good story, but... May 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed it, it was pretty good. But I have one problem with the story, and that is how things always magically just work out. Things happen so that everything works out smoothly for the characters (I won't spoil anything), but it always just so happens to be that when they want to do something, there is some convenient thing to aide that want along. It's almost too perfect.

Other than that, the writing is good, and the characters are loveable. I wouldn't mind having myself a grim reaper lover, especially after reading this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected, but still pretty good. March 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I expected a little more from this, at times it was a little cliche. However, I still stuck with the book til the end. The characters are likeable and it's a sweet romance. Not as hot and steamy as you might expect, but very fitting for the characters. I did like the different take on the reapers, pretty interesting. More of a mythology based story which I found appealing. I do wish the author would write a story for each of the brothers too, because they were really likeable. Overall, I did enjoy it, I just didn't love it as much as I wanted too. I'm not much of a romance fan, though. They tend to be to predictable but this did a better job than most romance novels.
