Not a true collector action figure,

I've read a couple of reviews and found that they have compared Hong Kong company Hot Toys quality to this action figure. In comparison, Hot Toys outshines, outblasts, and uncomparably outdoes DC Direct's The Dark Knight 12" Batman. Even at the price of $65.00 (I got mine back in 2008) this "toy" is just that. The paint job is shotty. My batman's knuckles had been rubbing against the side of the inner carboard insert so the paint came off. The toy is also stiff and because DC Direct decided to go with their generic body (which they use in all their DC Direct 12 inch action figures in this line) the figure's shoulder's look huge compared to his head/cowl. In comparison to Hot Toys Bats, it's body does not hang naturally. It's stiff, like a toy action figure. This is where Hot Toys shines. Their articulated bodies have more points of articulation and let's the body rest like an actual person's. The materials and sculpting, all the way from head to toe, are spot on to the movie, or at least much more accurate than you'll find from any other 1/6th action figure manufacturing company.
On price. Yes. DC Direct's Batman beats Hot Toys hands down, but this is where the divide of boys and men comes in. My Hot Toys Bats came in at around $150.00 with shipping. Twice the price. But IMO, you get what you pay for. To conclude, DC Direct's Batman is a toy. This is not a collector's item or at least not a true collector's item. But like anything, who knows what will sky-rocket in value years to come. Would I pay more than 80 bucks for this item? Definitely not. As I write this, Hot Toys continues to outdue itself. It may come to be that Hot Toys action figures value may plumet due to it's high cost of it's products. Again, I'm not an expert on the value of toys but if you want total accuracy from Sci-Fi movie figures, buy from the best.

Ok - the title of my review may put some people off but allow me to explain. I really like this figure....it is my first 1/6th scale collectible and I was very excited to purchase it and have someone from the US bring it for me. Here is what I like about it:
1. It looks very cool. 2. The details are quite authentic, including the likeness to Christian Bale. My wife disagrees but I think otherwise. 3. The figure appears to be quite durable and I don't think I will be damaging it in anyway anytime soon. 4. The cape is pose-able (has wires running on the sides). 5. A certificate of authenticity is included, which I felt was a nice touch. Can be framed, its on a nice parchment type thick paper. Here are the bad points: 1. I don't like the velvety cape! Some other nice, thick material would have suited this caped crusader better.....Batman in velvet? Is he going to the Annual Gotham Ball or something? 2. I was under the impression that this figure was made by Hot Toys. Please note that I am not discrediting the shipper in anyway since there is no place where they claim that on the product page. The real issue is that DC Direct is now shipping the Hot Toys version, but were earlier on shipping their own version (the one I got!). I am not really sure what the articulation differences are, but the HT version comes with an extra head (Bruce Wayne without the Bat mask), 3 pairs of hands (I may be wrong!) and an activated mine. I have read raving reviews of the HT figure so I am not sure what exactly I may be missing in this one (except for the items mentioned above). 3. The figure may be heavily articulated (HT or otherwise) but the Batsuit's nature prevents the possibility of any real poses. Bend an arm here, flex the knees a bit....and that's about it. 4. There is a "pneumatic wrangler" included....call me ignorant but for the life of me I cannot recall how and when Batman used it. There is no documentation included with the figure to explain what goes where. I guess we are all supposed to use our own heads for that. 5. The "grappling launcher" looks very nice, but the only pair of hands that are NOT closed fists cannot "hold" the gun....I tried many times to close the fingers around the gun shaft but the fingers are not very articulate. The only other pair of hands are closed fists. So overall, not bad. Just some points to take home: 1. This figure NOT made by Hot Toys, so only the one head (Batman mask on) and only one pair of extra hands (closed fists) plus no mine. 2. Velvet cape - not very nice. 3. Not very articulate. You may want to read a review (with photos) of the DC Direct version of The Dark Knight figure (this one) at the following link: http://www.superherotimes.com/newsarchive/003511.php Or you may want to check out the HOT Toys version review at this link: http://www.superherotimes.com/newsarchive/004297.php As for the shipment: I received the package without any damage and on time. 100 points for all that.

I have collected probably hundreds of high end 1/6 scale figures. There are lots of great companies selling these (expensive) adult collector scale figures based on many themes (military, science fiction, etc). This batman figure has to be one of the best. I rarely buy two of anything since I don't do the buy/sell gig, but I bought two just for my own collection. Of course, these are not toys at all. So play value should not be a factor. Don't buy your kid a hundred dollar figure unless he plans on starting a collection. If he's going to whack it around like one legged GI Joe, you may want to consider more durable toys that are meant for true play.
But as a fine a accurate replica, this is first rate. A very nice surprise. You won't confuse this with a toy! A great adult collectible for your desk. Joseph M. Vottis
