Book Description

Shattered Light March 1, 1999

Delos: a world not unlike our own...until a reckless attempt to capture the prima power of the universe shattered the very laws of nature, transforming Delos into a realm of magic. Now men vie with monsters, sword with sorcery, good with evil. And behind it all is the dread entity that was freed when the light shattered: the Laria.

A dangerous quest has created an impossible alliance: a vampire and a paladin, beings as opposite as night and day, must together find one of the land's lost shards...an artifact dating back to the remaking of Delos, and the one thing that might stop the Laria once and for all.

Based on the exciting new CD-ROM game from Simon & Schuster Interactive, and the massive multi-player game from Catware, at www.shatteredlight.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now this is a great book. . . ., July 7, 2001

Note: Some of this book's plot, and even the end results, are revealed in this review.

Truly, this is one of my FAVORITE standalone fantasy books ever, and that may seem a little stupid, but I enjoyed this book ALOT, and I've read it twice over. Placed in Delos, the enviroment and setting and world of Shattered Light, I was dissapointed to discover no map. Nonetheless, I think the idea of a main character as a vampire fooling a bunch of self-righteous knights and paladins into following him was absolutely unique, original, creative and brilliant. How about this, and I'll be blunt: no love story involved, deceptions and decieving galore, and all the main characters die in the end! HAHAHA! Incredible! I've read alot of fantasy (R. Jordan, T. Goodkind, D. Eddings, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and alot of more stuff) but I was completely stunned by this book. No epic storyline or passion, just damn hard-core fantasy.

However, I do have a COUPLE qualms regarding this book: the creatures they fight are more or less described to a VERY minor degree, such as to border on saying that the reader is left with no conceit or mental image regarding the monsters the characters fight.

And, although this is no complaint from me, I think the readers should be aware of this, the setting itself was unoriginal, despite the fact that the whole nation of Delos is perpetually set in a desert. No new fantasy creatures or elements can be found in this book, and so, for this reason, and perhaps the reason above, I give it four out of five stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Had to choke it down..., October 16, 2001

This review is from: Dark Light (Shattered Light #2) (Paperback)
I don't mean to offend the author, for I haven't read any of her other writtings as of yet, but this book spoke highly of one that was thrown together on a one week deadline.
The writing was poor, the plot rambling to a climax that never happened, and an ending that left me wondering what the point was, I feel this book is one of the worst I have ever read.
I've very little doubt that the author was forced to conform to the standards of the Shattered Light Game, which in itself was a dull, confusing, lifeless piece of work with a small following.
To the likes of Jordan, Brooks, Goodkind, and Feist, I easily say that this book is it's complete opposite.
