Book Description

August 25, 2009

Only Caroline knows the truth about her husband, the brilliant psychoanalyst whose list of patients includes some of Washington, D.C.'s, most celebrated. Caroline has seen the darkest side of this cruel, controlling psychopath who watches her every move. With only a few precious minutes allotted to her, escape is now or never. Caroline must run for her life . . . as far and fast as she can.

But even two thousand miles isn't far enough. A new identity, new town, and new love—rugged pro-footballer-turned-outdoorsman Ken Kincaid—won't protect her. Because Caroline knows Porter will never stop until he's hunted her down.

And there will be a reckoning . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Romantic comedy author Carroll (The True Match) brings tight prose and excellent pacing to her tense first thriller. Caroline Hughes abandons her abusive, controlling psychiatrist husband, hoping to begin a new life with a new name, but Dr. Porter Moross, a Freudian analyst who's more psycho than therapist, willingly destroys his life and career in a mad effort to track his elusive wife across the country. Finding shelter in a tiny mountain town, Caroline meets divorced football player Ken Kincaid, but their romance sometimes seems wedged into a story mostly focused on Porter's madness and Caroline's fear. Porter is both terrifying and sympathetic, while Caroline seems almost waifish until an unexpected and satisfying ending makes it clear that she's not just waiting for Ken to save her. Suspense fans who like a touch of romance will find this a winner. (Sept.)

More About the Author

Margaret Vodopia Carroll is a native of Queens, New York, and grew up in Commack, Long Island. She earned her BA at The George Washington University and worked on Wall Street for Standard & Poor's and E.F. Hutton before moving into travel. She worked as a trade journalist covering airlines and international luxury travel before joining British Airways as Director of P.R. U.S.A., based in New York with secondments to London and frequent travel overseas. She then joined Starwood Hotels as Director of Advertising & P.R. for the St. Regis and Luxury Collection hotels. She got married and moved to Santa Fe, N.M., where she established a P.R. consultancy that represented some of the area's leading attractions, including the historic La Fonda Hotel on the Plaza. She and her family now reside in Michigan, where she writes fiction in addition to being a full-time mom and homemaker.

"One of the great things about a career in travel is I have so many experiences from which to draw for my books," said Carroll. "I loved every minute of it, even the not-so-glam parts (like the time striking farmers with pitchforks shut down the perimeter of Budapest's airport, so my press fam tour and I had to do the last quarter-mile on foot. lugging our bags through fields and even climbing a fence, all in our Sunday best! I still got us upgraded to business class, by the way). My dream has always been to write fiction, and it's great to have that wealth of experience and memory stored up so I can use it in my thrillers."

What's next? "Definitely more thrillers, heavy on atmosphere and plots with lots of twists and turns."

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannot wait for more by Carroll, August 28, 2009

I am a huge fan of suspense novels and this is one of the best that I have read in a long time. From the first few pages I was rooting for Caroline to escape her past and was unable to put the book down until I finished - driving my own family crazy! Margaret Carroll draws her reader in and paints such a realistic picture of her characters that you quickly feel as though you know them. I cannot wait for her next release and have already become a big fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grabs you from page one!, August 27, 2009

This review is from: A Dark Love (Mass Market Paperback)
When the book arrived, I only had time to read the first two pages. But that's all it took. For the rest of the day, I couldn't wait to crawl into bed with this book, and it didn't disappoint. Every time I looked at the clock, knowing I needed to turn out the light, I'd think, just one more page. I finally forced myself to go to sleep, only to wake early and grab the book from my bedside table and begin reading again. I haven't come across a thriller that has captivated me like this for a long, long time. The writing is great, characters are very believable and the story line makes this book a page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling Suspense!, August 29, 2009

This review is from: A Dark Love (Mass Market Paperback)
From the moment I opened this book, I could not put it down. Margaret Carroll's ability to draw the reader in is amazing. I could feel myself in each scene, right there with the characters, as this story developed. The plot was well constructed and gripping; the characters alive and engaging. I took this book with me when I had to leave my reading chair... all in the hopes that another few moments of reading time would present itself to me and I could continue reading while the lives in this novel continued to unfold. Amazing, fun, suspenseful and exciting... a must read! The romance was awesome!
