Book Description

June 28, 2005
Elise Hanover feels the pull of the moon--even in its dark phase. She is a werewolf who feels nothing but disgust for the bloodlust and violent tendencies inside her. Nick Franklin is the man she met and fell in love with in college, and the man whose touch first awakened her beast. When she realized that her lust for him inspired the wolf inside her, she ran as far and as fast as she could. To defeat her furry side, she has spent the last five years in a secret location in Montana, trying to find a cure for lycanthropy. Just as she feels she's at the edge of a breakthrough, her research is interrupted. Nick is now an FBI agent--and he's standing in her lab. Minutes after they leave the building, it explodes, destroying all of Elise's research and the serum she needs to fight her bloodlust. Together, Nick and Elise must race to find a cure for before the next full moon rises. Dark Moon is full of dry wit, steamy chemistry, and truly scary villians.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Werewolves, witchie wolves, gypsies and trigger-happy werewolf hunters roam the landscape of Handeland's snappily written paranormal romance, the third in her Moon series (Blue Moon; Hunter's Moon). Dr. Elise Hanover is smart, cheeky and determined to protect humankind from the bloodthirsty werewolf population—even though she's a werewolf herself. Elise has concocted a serum to quell her blood lust, but she still turns furry when the moon is full, a fact that led her to walk away from a promising relationship years earlier. She gets a second chance, however, when her old beau, FBI agent Nic Franklin, arrives at the compound where she's been researching cures for werewolfism. In a breakneck sequence of events, the compound explodes; Elise and Nic flee to Fairhaven, Wis., where a handful of her co-workers are hunting werewolves; and they get caught up in solving the mystery of why so many people have gone missing in Fairhaven. In the process, Elise—Handeland's most appealing heroine yet—learns to embrace her inner canine. Though some of the plot twists will be old hat to those who have read the previous books, and Elise's co-workers have an annoying habit of wanting to shoot everyone (including Elise), this tense, banter-filled tale provides a few hours of solid entertainment. Praise for BLUE MOON

"Chilling and sizzling by turns! Lori Handeland has the kind of talent that comes along only once in a blue moon. Her sophisticated, edgy voice sets her apart from the crowd, making her an author to watch, and BLUE MOON is a novel not to be missed."-Maggie Shayne, author of Edge of Twilight

"Presenting an interesting and modern twist on the werewolf legend, Lori Handeland's Blue Moon is an intriguing mixture of suspense, clever humor, and sensual tension that never lets up. Vivid secondary characters in a rural, small-town setting create an effective backdrop for paranormal events. Will Cadotte is a tender and sexy hero who might literally be worth dying for. But the real revelation in the book is Handeland's protagonist, police officer Jessie McQuade, a less-than-perfect heroine who is at once self-deprecating, tough, witty, pragmatic and vulnerable. She draws you into the story and holds you there until the very end."-Susan Krinard, author of To Catch a Wolf

"Fantastic-one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. Anyone who reads paranormal will love this book and anyone who loves suspense should love it as well. It's an edge-of-the-seat read."
-Christine Feehan, author of Dark Melody on Blue Moon

"Scary sexy fun. A book this clever only comes along once in a Blue Moon."-Rachel Gibson, author of Daisy's Back in Town

"Handeland sets a feverish pace, thrusting Jesse into one dangerous situation after another, and she keeps readers in delicious suspense...What makes this books so compulsively readable, however, is Jessie's spunky narration, acerbic wit, and combustible chemistry with Will. Handeland has the potential to become as big as, if not bigger than, Christine Feehan and Maggie Shayne."-Publishers Weekly

"Hold on to your seats! Handeland delivers a kick-butt heroine ready to take on the world of the paranormal. BLUE MOON is an awesome launch to what promises to be a funny, sexy, and scary series."-Romantic Time, 4 ½ stars, "Top Pick"

"A fast paced and thought provoking story. Dynamic characters in BLUE MOON will leave you with no doubt that you are reading something special...the beginning of an exciting new series."-Enchanted in Romance

"This book has everything-excellent writing, fascinating characters, suspense, comical one-liners, and best of all, a super-good romance."-The Best Reviews

"An incredible werewolf story with a twist...full of sass and with a delightful, sarcastic sense of humor."-Paranormal Romances

"The action is fast-paced, the plot is gripping, the characters are realistic, and I absolutely positively cannot wait for the next book in this series."-Fallen Angel Reviews

"A dry wit that shines...Everything about this book is wonderful: the sizzling sexiness, the three-dimensional characters, and the sense of danger."-Romance Junkies

"Great intensity, danger, drama, captivation, and stellar writing."-The Road to Romance, Reviewer's Choice Award

"Lori Handeland makes a superlative debut in the world of paranormal romance with Blue Moon, first in an enticing new Moon trilogy. Blue Moon is simply not to be missed."-BookLoon Reviews

"If you enjoy werewolves that are linked to folklore with characters that seem to be in every town, whether it is small or big, then pick up a copy of Blue Moon. You will not be disappointed."
-A Romance Review

"A captivating novel that draws readers in from the first page...for a story that will entertain, delight, and have you glancing askance at the full moon, run, do not walk, to the nearest bookstore and grab Blue Moon...A book guaranteed to please readers of paranormal, suspense, and romance...a winner on all counts!"-Romance Reviews Today

5.0 out of 5 stars Howling Good Time!!!!, October 6, 2005
This review is from: Dark Moon (Nightcreature, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
Dr. Elise Hanover is on a mission. She has to find a cure to stop humans from turning into werewolves. Their lives depend on it. HER life depends on it, because she, too, is a werewolf. The changing disgusts her: the killing, the blood. Elise must find a cure before the next full moon. Only one person knows her secret, but not the love of her life Nic Franklin. Elise left him seven years ago when she first changed, without a word of goodbye or an explanation. Now his job has sent him to her lab for answers. Telling him will reveal secrets best left untold. Seeing him brings all her dormant feelings back to life, but she can't say anything. She has to get rid of him, and quickly, before he sees and learns things he shouldn't.

Nic Franklin had no idea that his newest assignment would bring him face to face with the woman who gave him a broken heart and many sleepless nights over the years. Now he needs answers about his list of missing persons. While questions are being answered, he'd like to know why the woman he loved left him without a word. Seeing Elise again reminds Nic that the flame of love he felt for her never went out.

When Elise's lab is blown up, she and Nic find themselves in the middle of a major mystery. Someone is shooting at Elise, her most dangerous test subject managed to escape the inferno, and there are dead bodies disappearing. Through all of this is the underlying current running between Elise and Nic. It's almost too much. As time goes on, Elise begins to embrace the werewolf in her, and begins to take charge of her power. There are lives to save, answers to be found, and possibly a love to rekindle.

Dark Moon is my first read from the Full Moon series. I have to say, I am sorry I've been missing out! Elise is a woman who goes from having no friends and staying in the shadows to a kicking-butt and taking-names Alpha female werewolf. Elise's vulnerability is almost tangible, but her slow transformation into an assertive I-am-She-wolf-hear-me-roar makes me crow with delight! Nic is a delicious man determined to get answers to every question he has, no matter what. His pain from Elise's sudden departure years ago is still fresh and I feel his pain. His love for Elise is something he doesn't want, but pretty soon stops fighting. The sexual tension between Elise and Nic makes the pages snap, crackle and pop. Nic is the perfect Alpha male to compliment Elise. Despite the deep-seated hurt between them, they still fit together like a puzzle.

The secondary characters are witty and full of personality. The small town of Fairhaven, Wisconsin is eerily creepy, the villains are chillingly evil, and mysterious secrets surround this book like London fog. These secrets can't be uncovered by Colombo or even Sherlock Holmes, only Elise and Nic can unravel them. They search for answers to the many questions, including the one on whether or not their love can overcome these major hurdles.

Lori Handeland does for werewolves what Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon do for vampires. Ms. Handeland is now on my favorite author's list. Get a copy of Dark Moon and enjoy a howling good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Elise's Story, June 30, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dark Moon (Nightcreature, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is about Elise and her predicament as a scientist and a werewolf. She appeared in Blue Moon and Hunter's Moon in cameos only, but she was definitely an "ice queen." Her secret Montana compound has been blown to bits, she's been reunited with her college boyfriend (whom she abandoned at her first transformation), and the biggest, baddest, and craziest werewolf has escaped during the destruction. Elise was born a werewolf and has to take a serum she created to keep the beast at bay. Mandenauer took her in as an orphan and had her raised by staff. Mandenauer's relationship with Jesse and Leigh hurts Elise's feelings as he was always cold to her, even as a child. Elise's former love, Dominic "Nic", is an FBI agent investigating some missing persons reports. (Elise took them out as a werewolf assassin as they were some fairly evil individuals.) Elise ran out on Nic with no explanation when she first changed. As there were the collectively psychotic werewolves in Blue Moon, the cannibalistic super-werewolf in Hunter's Moon, now there are the "witchy-wolves" in this one. Oh yeah, and as in the past...they want to rule the world.

Enjoy this werewolf tale!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, March 28, 2006
This review is from: Dark Moon (Nightcreature, Book 3) (Mass Market Paperback)
I must admit I have really become a fan of the "Moon" series by Handeland. I have to admit that I have read all four to date and find them entertaining and easy to read.

Imagine the possibilities, Doctor (Elise)attempting to cure "lycanthropy", and guess what she has the disease, and she left her lover several years ago for fear of how he would react to her condition, only to be reunited with her lost love (a studly agent) to solve a mystery. It's a wonderful story with a happy ending.
