Dark Night Journey focuses on individual ways of knowing G-d when the difficulties of life hit with full force (divorce, death of a loved one, loss of job/vocational calling, severe illness, imprisonment, natural disasters, and impending death)? The book suggests that even when one feels like his/her journey is in a desert with no water or signposts of which way to go, the mystery of creation is there to comfort as one empties oneself of expectations, compulsive or protective behaviors, and self-consciousness.

Although I found the language of the book to fit Christians almost exclusively, calm reassurance is offered to those on other paths. The fact that the reader is looking for G-d and meaning while going through this difficult time is a positive sign. Many people have trod this way before and have made it to the other side where they are empowered with a renewed sense of their vocation. The world to which the journeyer is called needs the specific gifts of compassion earned through his/her hardship. In this respect, Dark Night Journey is similar to Henri Nouwen's The Wounded Healer and gives hope that suffering has its redeeming qualities.
