4.0 out of 5 stars Tough Love, December 23, 2009
By
Helen Brooks is a wonderful writer, she brings me into her books so well that at times I would like to reach in and point things out to the characters that they seem to miss, that is right in front of their faces. The publisher didn't get Gerard coloring right, he had tawny hair (pg 9). But it is better than no picture at all, or a picture of a door way, or a garden.
Samantha Kittyn or Kit to her friends, is engaged to David Shore her friend Emma's brother, but when she went to the flat she and David were buying, she found David in the bed with Virginia. Duh!
Kit went to Morocco to cool her heels. Why? I have know idea, that was never brought out, but she was attacked while walking alone in broad daylight. It just happens to be right outside Gerard Dumout's office.
He found her, took her to hospital and then home. Because Kit had lost her memory.
Kit was a independent person, who had a rough life with her stepfather Colin, he beat her badly when she was young. Kit's mother stopped the beatings at first, but Colin liked kinky sex, and Kit's mother became so addicted to the kind of sex he gave her that she didn't care about anything but being with Colin.
This marked Kit in all her relationships with men, she always went with small, weak men, who wouldn't touch her, either her heart or her person with violence.
Gerard was a big strong man, Kit was afraid of him, but she didn't know why. Yet she went to his home with him after talking to Colette.
When one of Gerard's servants beat his wife and kids; Kit got her memory back because she remembered her stepfather beating her.
All through the book, Gerard kissed, fondled and made out with Kit in a forceful manner, but always said He would never do anything to hurt her. Ha!
It's not until Kit gets back to England that Gerard starts to woo her. With flowers, cards, letters etc.
Then he shows up and sweeps her off her feet in an ending that makes up for all the rest of his clumsy love making.
From the back of the book: 'A dangerous attraction. When Kit was stranded in Morocco with no money, her memory a blank, she could only pray for a miracle. And when Gerard Dumont, a gorgeous Frenchman, came to her rescue, Kit was so grateful that it didn't occur to her he might not be the charming protector her seemed...
It wasn't long before Kit discovered that Gerard had a hidden agenda, But by then it was too late. This brooding stranger had taken over her life, and Kit soon realized he'd also captured her heart.'
