About the Author

Since the issuing of Solar Journal: Oecological Sections by Black Sparrow Press in 1970, Richard Grossinger (richardgrossinger.com) has published some 35 books, most of them with his own press, North Atlantic Books, but also titles with Harper, Doubleday, Sierra Club Books, and J. P. Tarcher, among others. These have ranged from long explorations of science, culture, and spirituality (The Night Sky, Planet Medicine, Embryogenesis) to memoirs and nonfiction novels (New Moon, Out of Babylon) to experimental prose (Book of the Earth and Sky, Spaces Wild and Tame) and science fiction (Mars: A Science Fiction Vision). Grossinger received a PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1975 and lives with his wife Lindy Hough in Berkeley, California.

If you are already familiar with Richard Grossinger's other writings on science, spirituality and consciousness then you can rest assured that his latest "book" continues along the same trajectory. I say "book" because what began as notes and journal entries from his post 2008 psychic work became the 3 volume (1500 page!) study of the "Dark Pool of Light" (a reference to the ineffable source of consciousness in this self-arising universe). Yet while similar and consistent with his earlier writings it also seems to go beyond them in an ongoing process of synthesis and integration, and so also seems a perfect place for someone new to his writing to begin.

This Dark Pool of Light marks a change for Grossinger from his more objective approach (rooted in his traditional training as an archaeologist and subsequent alternative-minded search for the meaning of life, for the why and how-could-it - self organize and be conscious - beyond the mere how-it-does of conventional religion and science) to a more internal approach (intuitive rather than mental) as a result of his recent psychic studies and training. His writing style is still the same but his perspective is now more from the inside-out. I'm sure this change in perspective is very different for him, but for me as a reader his writing seems very much as it always has (since it is still being filtered though my mind!). It still covers a vast range of material in an eclectically inclusive and discursive way, but maybe what is different is that it now also seems particularly insightful and able to get to the heart of the matter. What is also different is that, as Grossinger describes it, much of this is "a kind of psychic jazz" dialogue between Grossinger and his mentor John Friedlander, and this obviously flavors the writing.

Richard Grossinger’s Dark Pool of Light series is a must have for any student of metaphysics, spirituality and/or the nature of consciousness. Set apart by its frenetic, boundary-busting prose, Volume 2, serves up a delicious blend of all things esoteric, playing various traditions and practices off one another to illuminate the assumptions, implications and possibilities of liberation as (mis?)understood in our time.

For me, one of the more intriguing aspects of this work is Richard’s comparison of the Western Hermetic tradition, with its focus on increasing the awareness and development of the subtle body, with that of the non-dual traditions, which seek to liberate the individual to realize their fundamental dignity by taming the “monkey mind.” While superficially seeming to celebrate different purposes, methods, and epistemological foundations, Richard shows how at a deeper level, these traditions are differentiated more by emphasis and subjective preference than any absolute incompatibility. Importantly, he does so in a way that honors the essential integrity of each tradition and goes beyond the superficial universality that often characterizes New Age writings. As a Reiki master and regular meditator, this discussion (along with much of Richard’s writing) has brought greater clarity and depth to my understanding, and opened up new possibilities for intellectual synthesis and inquiry across practices.

Also of particular interest is Richard’s discussion of the psychic training he undertook at the Berkeley Psychic Institute. At the center of this work, the psychic rose is presented as a key symbol for the transmutation of stuck energy in one’s auric field.
