Mmmmmm...Hold On Just One Moment Here...,
By Mv2.3 "This Is My Fake Name Badge" (In the Aether and in the Other) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dark Ruby (Dark Jewels Trilogy) (Paperback)
Let me get this straight. This Lord Roderick has supposedly killed two wives when they fail to give him sons. All right. Now he's angling on Wife #3, whom he has left pure and virginal while he goes off to do whatever it was that important Welsh lords did. In a frenzy, and detecting a pattern in her husband, Lady Gwynn first drags her midwife into her chamber to check her for pregnancy (was she expecting that you-know-who was coming back). Imagine a lusty young thief beer goggling tha lady during the useless exam...and then being invited to spend three days in her bed so that she might get pregnant and pass the kid off as her husband's (assuming her husband is stupid enough to forget he's never slept with his wife). Okay, right there the book was ruined for me--Gwynn proves early on that she's too stupid (or clueless) to make a good heroine. Dark Ruby is readable, even if it isn't particularly likeable. Just be prepared to have your sense of disbelief suspended.

In 1271 Wales, Lord Roderick of Rhydd is known for killing wives who fail to leave him with an heir. His current spouse, Lady Gwynn desperately prays that she will soon give birth to a boy. Gwynn has a slight reprieve as Roderick is off fighting. When Gwynn nabs Trevin McBain hiding inside her room, she sees him as an avenue to protect her future. If he makes love to her, she will allow him to leave along with the valuable ring he was trying to steal. Trevin accepts the terms. For the next three days, they make enjoyable love even though he is shocked to learn that she was a virgin. Meanwhile Roderick is captured by his enemy. In 1284, Roderick finally escapes and returns home. When he gazes upon his son Gareth, he immediately denounces Gwynn of cuckolding him. When he roughs Gwynn, Gareth kills him. Roderick's brother, Ian, becomes the new lord and to protect her son, Gwynn marries Ian. Trevin, who has become a Baron, wants to recognize his biological son as his heir. When Trevin and Gwynn meet for the first time in thirteen years, they realize that their teenage attraction was actually a deep abiding love. However, before they can pursue a future together, they must save Gareth from his "uncle". When a renowned contemporary romance writer tries to enter the Medieval romance sub-genre, skeptics from both worlds abound. However, in the brilliant hands of Lisa Jackson, readers should not be shocked that the talented author facilitates such a switch without losing any of the charm of her modern tales. DARK RUBY is a well-written, action-packed novel story filled with interesting characters. The obviously multifaceted Ms. Jackson is a welcome addition to the Medieval romance book world. This book is a wondeful read! I couldn't put it down, the characters are truly something to look into! Trevin, the daring bandit, with a rough outside and a passion that flows through the fair Lady Gywnn. I found it to be a great love story, not to mention the extreme plot! The action was an attention grabber, all around something no one should miss!

raises the TSTL bar,
This review is from: Dark Ruby (Dark Jewels Trilogy) (Paperback)
I just couldn't get over the premise of this book. The heroine's married to an evil man who's killed his last two wives because they didn't give him sons. The hero's a thief who's hiding in her room while the midwife gives her a gyn exam to see if she's pregnant yet. She's not. She demands the thief get her pregnant to save her life, otherwise she'll turn him in & he'll lose his hands if not his life... and it turns out she's a virgin. *bashing my head repeatedly on the desk* How stupid is this heroine? Talk about TSTL--this takes the cake. The hero's not all that great, either. Once he returns to claim his son, he despises her for making compromises to save his son's life. I guess these two morons deserve each other, not that I could see any reason for them to fall in lurrve other than the hot nookie 12 years earlier which she forced on him.
