THE DARKER THE BETTER!,

This a beautifully made and well thought out game that should not go by unnoticed. It is what you get if you cross RESIDENT EVIL with MAX PAYNE (minus the bullet time): a fast Third-Person Shooter with an immersive story, imaginative weapons and cool moves. Finishing off zombies has never been more fun!
The graphics are detailed yet monochromatically biased: greys, blue and yellow sectors alternate. At first I found this unrealistic (which it is) but it sure fights the well known F/TPS repetitiveness feeling of running in the same corridors for ever. Since the game enjoys (or suffers) a quick recovery cycle, you are almost never in danger of immediate death - but this hardly impends any adrenaline from flooding your body. Moreover, once our hero (Hayden) gets infected and acquires the glaive, a whole new ball-game opens up: although of limited effectiveness as a melee weapon, this cycle-edged discus will deal devastating arcs of gore and destruction to his enemies! Oh yes, this is quite a gory game, mind you (I think it was banned in Australia for that). So, unless intended for young children, RECOMMENDED!

Best game I've played in a long time,

I've just recently started playing this game, and I must say, it's the best game I've played in a long time. The graphics are great, the game is long, and on easy, it's still quite challenging. I would recommend this game to an avid gamer any day.
In the beginning you don't get the bladed apparatus as you see on the cover, so the game seems to not be as fun as it could be, but just hold out - you'll get your blade soon enough. :) It is 3rd person, but if you've played Gears of War at all, you'll get the hang of this in no time. As NeuroSplicer stated, this game is gory: legs and arms get cut off, lots of blood spatters, amongst other gory things happen. To me, seeing an enemy hop on one leg until they eventually die is entertaining, but this game is definitely not intended for the younger audience. I have Vista Ultimate x64, and I've never had a single problem running this game.

This game plays very well on my older Dell PC with a Pentium 4 3.4ghz. Graphics, controls, and gameplay are very nice. The issue with video settings and aspect ratio seems to be a minor problem.
Even though I have a wide screen monitor, I set the video to a 1:3 ratio with very little verticle stretching. Even though the game does not keep the video setting each time it is started up, I have found that setting the video to another setting and then resetting back to my preference and then restarting from my latest checkpoint, then it is all good again ... a little bit of a hassle, but for this price and the great action and fun this game provides, it is very worth it. Recommended!

The Good: A nice story line with an interesting boomerang like weapon. Any additional weaponry you find is neat, but you hardly ever need it unless you need to make a long shot or destroy some armord irritation.
The Bad: The initial control setup just plain sucks. I had to reconfigure my keyboard to make it more pleasing to control the main character. Also, fighting areas had no really big suprise as the second you entered into a place with chest high walls, you could mentally prepare yourself for the fight before it started. The Rundown: Fun and some challenging points, limited and mostly useless weapon selection and irritating controls.

i bought this because i had heard about it, and of course amazon reviews. they were right... this is by far the best i have played, since resident evil/gears of war. how many games out there, this has to be one of the best. it should have been "game of the year" without the exaggeration. it is definitely lengthy and deserves recognition!

Dark Sector is a near future third-person shooter in which you play spec-ops CIA agent Hayden Tenno. Tenno is sent to the virus infected, fictional Eastern Bloc country of Lasria to "eliminate a target." While there he is exposed to a biological compound which mutates his arm, giving him the ability to create and hurl a 3-bladed glaive-like weapon. This weapon acts as a boomerang, can damage and dismember enemies as well as capture various elements for greater effects. After his mutation Hayden sets out to halt the spread of the virus and destroy those who infected him. Here are my thoughts on Dark Sector;
Pros + Gorgeous graphics. + Dark storyline. + Phenomenal musical score and ambient soundscape. + Challenging but not frustratingly impossible boss battles. + The glaive is truly an awesome weapon. The developers perfected its use in the game. + Brutal and gory combat, especially with the glaive. + Many horror scares in the game. Cons - No patch was ever released. - Some load up problems, although they're easily fixed with a restart. - Inventory and upgrade system could use some tweaks and a bit more explanation - Money for upgrades is rather scarce. - No jumping or crouching, just a Gears of War style dash and cover system. The dashing can be a bit disorienting if you're not used to it. - Reoccurring sound distortion where static/wind noises would be amplified and constant completely overpowering all other sounds in the game. This issue is constant and will not fix itself even on a restart of the game. The only way I figured out how to fix it was by resetting the sound controls to default. - No stealth gameplay or mechanics. - Story became rather secondary. - Enemy types are rather limited and constant Waves of them can become a bit tiresome. - Questionable Save system forced me to complete entire chapters for fear of overwriting my previous saves. It happened a few times which set me back a chapter or two. I learned the hard way half way through the game to back up my game saves. - Linear gameplay. Dark Sector had nearly everything I look for in an action game. Great graphics, dark story, adult theme, viscous combat etc. yet there were enough small cons to keep it from a 5 star rating. The game was a decent length but I could have continued playing if content allowed. Using the glaive never got old and I would have liked to have tried more weapons/upgrades but was limited by the amount of money available. One of the better action games I've played in a long time I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's interested in the genre. |
