Editorial Reviews

With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-TV from 1966-71, Dark Shadows has earned the reputation as being one of the most unusual and enduring programs in television history. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden 175 year-old vampire, brought the show tremendous success. In 1970, Daphne Harridge pleads with the evil ghost of Gerard Stiles, begging him to spare the children at Collinwood from harm. Dr. Julia Hoffman and Willie Loomis discover the identity of the vampire that has been attacking Maggie Evans. Sebastian Shaw declares that Gerard¹s ghost will take over Collinwood. Using the stairway through time, Julia escapes to the year 1840 and anxiously awaits Barnabas Collins to join her, posing as his sister. Desmond Collins shows servant Ben Stokes the mysterious and magical head of Judah Zachery. Lamar Trask enlists psychic Leitica Faye to use her powers to find out the fate of his father, Reverend Trask, who disappeared in 1795. Using the name Valerie as an alias, Angelique the witch returns and learns that Barnabas has been released from his coffin. She warns him that unless they live together as man and wife, she will cause his true love, Roxanne Drew, to become a vampire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Soap, May 3, 2009
This review is from: Dark Shadows DVD Collection 23 (DVD)
Here is the next dark shadows collection 23 in the 26 collections of this great classic soap on dvd. This soap had everything from going back in time to 1796 where Victora was almost hang for being an witch and yes you go back through time again to see how Quentin became the werewolf. So if you love classic soaps like I do then this is an must for all fans young and old this is not like the soaps of today cause you don't see them in bed together hardly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Shadows: A Cult Classic, November 29, 2006
This review is from: Dark Shadows DVD Collection 23 (DVD)
This series is a wonderful example of type. The caveats are that the viewer must like the subject (vampires and other Gothic stuff)and "old" presentations. It's nice because the language is inoffensive as are the actions of the characters (unless one is offended by the subject-matter, in which case, one isn't watching it anyway). The story is compelling, and one is drawn to the characters. For myself, it was the only "soap opera" I have ever watched - and I did, on a regular basis. I felt deprived if I had to miss an episode, and I taped them all. It is a thoroughly engaging series.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1840 Top Notch, May 3, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dark Shadows DVD Collection 23 (DVD)
As the story moves back to 1840, the writing, acting and production all markedly improve to the best they have been on the series thus far, though perhaps not as dearly remembered as the 1795 or 1897 storylines. The disembodied head of Judah Zachary is easily the most disturbing horror element the show has seen. Sadly, episode 1109 is Kathryn Leigh Scott's last.
