Book Description

September 2003
Patric LeClerc is surrounded by darkness. Blinded in a tragic accident years before, he does nothing but drive everyone away with his anger and resentment over the life he's been cursed with.

Everyone, that is, except Callie Carpenter. Desperate for a home and a job after the break-up of her dreadful marriage to a wealthy but abusive man, she tries to restore Dark Gardens Plantation to its former glory.

Patric lets his guard down and shows her that deep within, a spark of warmth and humanity still glows. Soon she finds herself more interested in him as a man than a patient. When her ex threatens to take away her son, Callie and Patric join forces to try to save the boy.

But can Patric's dark past ever allow him to see Callie's love for him, or will he drive her away as well, for having come too close to the true, if vulnerable, Patric LeClerc?

From the Inside Flap

Determined to be careful, Callie nudged his knees apart and stepped between them. The warmth of his thighs pressing in on her legs spread throughout her body, awakening the sensations of life she'd thought gone for good. She'd not even considered ever finding another man attractive, but as she cleaned Patric up, the man she found beneath the shadows intrigued her.

She shaved off the last section of hair and inspected her handy work. "I'll need to moisturize it."

His eyes snapped open. "Do what you have to."

Callie kept her gaze on him as she twisted the lid off a jar of cream. The lotion felt cool on her hands as she rubbed her palms together. When she finally pulled up enough courage to touch him, the sensations nearly knocked her over. Wanting to make quick work of it and be done, Callie rubbed the cream on his smooth skin.

"Easy there. It's hard, but still has feeling," Patric said, his voice raspy.

Her hands stilled when he reached up and covered them. Patric urged her fingers to move beneath his, and Callie wanted to sigh out loud. She stared at his hands covering hers as their fingers locked together in their motions.

A moment later, he jerked his hands away and pushed her from between his legs. "I can do this," Patric snapped.

Watching the rise and fall of his chest, she didn't have to wonder if he'd been as affected as her. However, she wasn't at all comfortable with his reaction.

"Dark Shines My Love" is billed as a Gothic, interracial love story set in Louisiana. It was recommended to me by Amazon, the story intrigued me and I was desperate for a good romance, so I decided to give it a try. Instead of the good romance I was hoping to find, I got an uneven love story with a heroine I didn't really care for and a cookie cutter ending.

Patric LeClerc is a blind, recluse who has no use for people, especially the nurses that have been sent to take care of him. He is rude, angry and a pill to live with. He has managed to run all of his nurses off until he meets Callie Carpenter. Callie is trying to build a live for herself and her son while running from her abusive ex- husband. Becoming Patric's live in nurse will provide a stable income as well as a home.

Patric was the classic tortured hero whose hard exterior masks a lonely, vulnerable being in need of love and companionship. He fits the mold of the gothic hero perfectly. He doesn't trust people and pushes everyone away even though he desperately needs them. But once you get past all the bluster, he was a teddy bear.

Callie was a little more problematic for me. Most of the time, she was levelheaded and gentle. She wasn't a pushover and refused to let Patric bully her or her son. My quibble with Callie was that when she needed her common sense the most, it seemed to desert her. When dealing with her abusive ex-husband, she was a spineless ninny. All of the spunk and grit that she had with Patric was gone. A crying shell of a woman was there every time the ex-husband was in the room. It was hard to reconcile that behavior and her behavior with Patric.

Also, while the chemistry between Patric and Callie was okay, I found myself annoyed at the number of misunderstandings that these characters had. Instances where one would not let the other speak really tried my patience. Mature adults let their partners explain themselves.

I also found the ending to be a little half-baked and completely unnecessary. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I don't understand why the author felt it was necessary to make such a major change in a character. It missed the whole point of loving and accepting yourself for who you are and learning that someone else may love you just the way you are.

"Dark Shines My Love" didn't do that much for me. It had some good points, but the story never really clicked.

I would also like readers to note that Patric is African American and Callie is Caucasian. I didn't expect that when I ordered the book, so I wanted to inform other readers.

Bright Shines This Book! April 5, 2006
By delenor
Format:Paperback
I went through a great deal of trouble to get my hands on this book after reading an excerpt in another book. I was so drawn by the glimpse I had of the main characters that I set out to find a copy, even though it was listed as 'out of print'/'out of stock' in most bookstores, and online. I was finally able to get a copy from a used bookstore (online via Amazon), and was rewarded for my tenacity with a beautiful, funny, and moving story! I absolutely loved 'Dark Shines My Love' - it's not every day one has the good fortune to read such an excellent story of a blind hero and a spunky, loving, and patient heroine. Blinded as a result of an accident when he was a child, Padric LeClerc has been locked in darkness and emotional pain for years; he held the world at arms length, and fed the local rumour that he was a dark, dangerous, and bitter man. Fleeing an abusive marriage, along came Callie and her small son, and their little kitten, looking for work & a safe place to heal, and finding this beautiful but wounded soul living in darkness, with only his memories for company. Afraid of being hurt again, he lashes out at all who comes near - but Callie, herself a survivor and recognizing his inner pain, sees the true man behind the mask, and sets out to 'show him the light' so to speak. Between Callie, her son, and the kitten, Padric does not stand a chance! Slowly oh so slowly the man comes out to play...and finds the unexpected! What a beautiful, moving, elegant story. Even the villain, the hated ex-husband, bent on destruction of Callie's new found independence and growing happiness, is memorable, for he is not your typical abusive husband, no 'beer gut' & stained clothing here - he comes, in fact, from the 'right' side of the tracks ($$$$)! If you can, get a copy of this book and prepare for it to make its way into your heart and on to your 'keeper shelf' - it's on mine! Thank you Ms. Hart!

This beautiful story takes the reader into the hearts of the two main characters. I actually cheered at the final outcome of the story. High on my list of must reads.
