Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In the latest Patrick Gillard and Ingrid Langley mystery, the husband-and-wife team of crime fighters are worried for their lives when an unknown shooter fires bullets into a room where they are meeting their boss. When they mention the incident to their friend DCI Carrick, they learn that Carrick, too, was attacked years ago by a man who would later be convicted of a particularly disgusting crime, a man who has recently been released from prison. It isn’t long before the man is found dead and circumstantial evidence points rather strongly to Carrick. Patrick and Ingrid risk their own careers to prove their friend’s innocence. This is a popular series, and it’s easy to see why. Patrick and Ingrid are an excellent team, their relationship a nice mixture of personal and professional, and the stories are dramatic and exciting. This one earns its title, too: there is a considerable amount of darkness here, though not enough to change the overall tone of the series. --David Pitt

"An exciting combination of police procedural and thriller, Duffy again provides the daring duo with plenty of cerebral and physical challenges.” (Kirkus Reviews)

It's so nice to be back with Patrick and Ingrid again. I have always loved this couple, from back in their early days in Murder of Crows and onward. I highly recommend that readers who don't know their unique story go back to the beginning and read the series in order. Their story has stayed with me over the decades, impossible to forget. I miss the early books, though, when it was as much about their relationship as it was about the crime they were solving. I wish Duffy would delve into their relationship more... I do miss that.

My status for this book is a lie, I have not read it, well not all of it, only three quarters and I reached my limit of frustration. A short format book was unfortunately not short enough. The writing style of Margaret Duffy I found, as another reviewer also suggested was challenging. The story was very difficult to follow and there was a total absence of hooks to keep your interest. This book would be a contender for a high score on the Hawking Index, for books that readers are most likely not to finish reading. The crime mystery is one in a series of featuring the Gillard and Langley partnership where one of their colleagues is the target of a drive by shooting in London. After the first chapter it becomes increasingly difficult to follow and understand who is who and where you are. It may be me and my expectations are set to high, but I don't think so.

I agree completely with the first review, took the words right out of my mouth. Awful book.
