Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this action-packed contemporary, Anderson (Dangerous Waters) weaves together a tapestry of powerful suspense and sizzling romance. Davis Silver learns that someone is planning to set him up for embezzlement—the same fraudulent charge that sent him to prison years ago. Before he is killed, he warns his daughter, Anna, about a group of desperate ex-military criminals who will want the incriminating papers Davis mailed her. He advises her that the only person he trusts to keep her safe is Brent Carver, Davis’s far younger former cellmate. Anna falls for Brent—a brave, brooding artist—and as bodies pile up, he fights to keep her safe. Able plotting and sympathetic characters take the reader on a satisfying journey with steamy romance to enjoy along the way.

Most Mystery Romances are so romance heavy that the mystery/thriller aspects are not well developed. This story actually has a good thriller aspect. It isn't high lit or anything but it is a pleasant way to pass a layover or a rainy afternoon. There were a couple things I disliked.

First, the couple who are going to fall for each other meet and it is wildly unrealistic. In theory, they met, each thinking the other was a danger. But still in the middle of that, adrenaline pumping, they are noticing how attractive each other are. If I think someone is trying to kill me, I am not going to be blushing because of their piercing eyes. Even if they are naked- which Carver was. Honestly the meet was so badly done that I started to despair for the rest of the book. But it gets better.

Second, we meet Carvers awesome brother and the brother's fiance. They are interesting and likable. They also just sort of wander out of the story. It's a little odd.

Lastly, Anderson uses one of my least favorite gimmicks. Instead of slowly building up the bad guy so that we understand he is bad, she goes for the quick trick. He wants to rape Anna. This really bugs me. We should be a little more cautious about sexual assault as a plot device. It should never be used as a short hand for "this is the bad guy- hate him".

All in all it's fine. Especially for the genre.

This item was given to me for my review.

Dark Waters by Toni Anderson is a chase within a chase. Anna and Brent are thrown together by a dying phone call from Anna's father indicating that he was about to be killed because he had information that the bad guys want. He goes on to say that he has mailed the information to Anna, and she would know where. He wants her to find his old friend Brent and stay with him because he would keep her safe. The rest of the story is about Brent and Anna searching for the information while outwitting some very bad guys. The plot, while rather cliche, was not uninteresting, and parts of the story moved along at a suspenseful pace. For this, I gave the novel a tentative 3 star rating. However, Anderson has a bad habit of repeating herself throughout the book, and this fact added a certain amount of tedium to the novel. Additionally, there was entirely too much mental angst with both Brent and Anna for my liking. If your character is mentally analyzing her relationship in the middle of a life and death struggle, there is just way too much mental angst. Also, if she has said, for the sixth time, "Why am I reacting to him this way?", and she has not figured it out already, then she is not innocent or naive, she is just a bit slow. Those sorts of things, along with language (dialogue, dialogue, dialogue, PLEASE), grated. Dark Waters was a mixed bag. Interesting enough to finish or take from the library, but I was glad that I did not pay for this one. It is obvious that Toni Anderson CAN write, but I think she might want to do some tweaking. Keep the pace, lose the repetition and cliches.

I enjoyed the mystery side of this book, but occasionally found the increasing romance side of it a bit too cliched for my taste as the romance part was a bit on the hot and heavy type, with the main characters fighting off their overwhelming attraction for each other, while in the midst of danger.

Fairly interesting mystery side, rather typical romance slant.
This was listed as a "mystery" on the book list, as I generally do not read romance novels. but the puzzle kept me interested and other than a few eye-rolling moments at the somewhat overly descriptive romantic moments, I enjoyed it.

More for the romance novel fans, but probably tolerable to some mystery readers

This is a really great romantic suspense with a strong mystery/thriller aspect. I loved the two main characters-wary, smart, troubled people who are trying to surmount their past hardships and build a solid future-and of course, they have super hot chemistry and both have a deep well of untapped feelings. The bad guys were evil, there was a super good twist at the end and the action was non stop. We also got an update on the characters from this author's previous book which I love. All told, excellent romantic suspense, ticks all the boxes and then some.

This was by far the most action packed book that I have read to-date. The storytelling moved along like a big-budget movie. There was murder, mystery, deceit, I could visualize everything that happened in this book just as if it were playing on my big screen TV. To say that I was more than impressed would be an understatement.

Dark Waters is the story of Anna Silver and her unexpected search to find out the truth behind the so-called accidental death of her father, Davis Silver and his supposed theft of $60 million. There is an extensive cast of characters that include several former military guys, an ex-con, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Everything about this book keeps you on your toes until the final chapter. To make things even more like a script from Hollywood, the ex-con plays the hero.

In short, Davis Silver discovers a money laundering scheme that gets him killed. His daughter enlists the help of Davis' former cellmate, Brent Carver. Brent spent time in prison for murdering his father. I could give you more details will just have to read the book to figure out the rest. I will say that there is enough baggage surrounding the main characters that it could fill an airport terminal. Either way, hands down the best book that I have read this year.
