Book Description

August 26, 2005
In this novel, many readers will encounter, perhaps for the first time, seagoing people whose predecessors carried on a long-distanced trade at a sustained and incredible magnitude long before the dawn of the Roman Empire. It is not by accident or a result of European and American innovation that the waterways in this novel have become so important to world trade in our present day. These waterways have maintained that distinction for millennia. Allow Justice Hawk to introduce you to these people and their perceptions of our world. This is a story about the most cunning and ruthless pirates the world has ever known.

Caution: This novel contains savagery and is not intended for young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you feel like you are traveling the waters of Southeast Asia!, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Dark Waters (Paperback)
Dark Waters is an excellent novel. As I read it, I felt like I knew what it was like to be aboard a cargo ship in the waterways of Southeast Asia. Justice Hawk does a great job describing, in vivid detail, the specifics of what a sailor sees senses and feels as he is aboard a ship. The fact that the sailor in the book is a modern-day pirate adds to the richness and depth of the description.

The novel also contains a lot of philosophic observations on human nature, international politics and economics. The main pirate in the book often gets down to the fundamentals of life, both verbally and physically. However he never descends into cynicism. Instead, the observations are born of practical experience (instead of theoretical philosophies). These perceptions are appropriately woven into the main plot line of the novel. I also learned a lot about the "dark side" of international trade; about the repugnant details of some trade that helps determine the ultimate price of the products that many people in the world buy.

I am left with wanting to board a ship myself and sail the waters that Justice Hawk describes so well in the book. The description of the land from the ship gives you an appreciation of the geographic wonder of the area.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a feeling of a part of the world that is not discussed much in the American mainstream media.
